Please disregard the other answer...you don't have to do all that. To reset to factory settings all you have to do is hold down the VIDEO 1 button and press the power button. CLEAR should show up on the display, then you're done.

I don't have a fix but I think the general explanation that could explain both issues would be that the memory for your settings isn't being retained. Check to see if the digital audio source you're having trouble hearing still has its input assigned to it. I'm thinking all your settings go back to 'factory' when you turn it off.

Each time I turn my Onkyo HTR500 on, it goes back off. What do I need to do

If it still does that with all speakers disconnected the manual and reality would require a trip to the shop for a hands-on analysis.

If bought new return immediately for replacement. The amp section is no good and cannot be reset - needs repair. but you are under WARRANTY - use it.
