Instruction Manual for TAPPAN CONVERTA-COOK MODEL 13-1581-10 or O'Keefe & Merritt Converta-Grill

We bought a home that has an O'Keefe & Merritt Converta-Grill Cooktop installed in the counter. It looks exactly like the Tappan Converta-Cook Model 13-1581-10 except it has O'Keefe & Merritt Converta-Grill as the name on the unit. It turns on and gets hot and only yesterday we realized that the side section raises up and vents - the vent immediately turned on when we raised it and started running fine. We would love to be able to use this grill but are hesitant without reading the manual or having more information first. We are wary of trying to grill anything on it because it is electric and right below the grills are electric heating elements which I'm afraid if grease dropped onto them they would catch fire. Does anyone have any information on this grill and if so will you please help us out?

I NEED MORE INFO, BUT I THINK THE HANDLE IS HELD BY TENSION FROM THE BRACKET. MOST LIKELY TARS AND AN ITEM WE CALL "VARNISH" IN THE RESTAURANT INDUSTRY{ COOKED, ACCUMULATED FATS] HAVE JAMMED THE AREAS THAT ARE TO MOVE FREELY. LOOOK TO SEE IF THIS MAY BE THE CASE. FOR MOST APPLICATIONS TRY USING WD-40[NO OPEN FLAMES!!!] TO DESOLVE ANY BUILD-UP.(ALLOW TIME FOR WD TO WORK, MAY TAKE MORE THAN ONE APPLICATION)

SOURCE: Temp

Not sure on your climate.
But a Holland grill cooks cooler in the coller months and Hotter in the hotter months. This type of grill doesn't reach a very high setting approx: 400 degrees. It might reach higher temperatures in the hotter weather 450-475 degrees.

Also, it has to shut down the same way every time you use your grill.

Here is a Tip to fix a grill that not getting hot:
1. Turn the gas valve knob off. then close LP tank valve knob.
2. Unscrew the plastic hose coupling knob from the LP tank. You may hear a slight "hissing" sound as pressure is released this is normal.
3.Wait a minute then screw the coupling knob back on to LP Tank.
4.With lid open.slowly open LP tank valve.
5.Relight the grill the proper way by turning gas valve knob to ON position while turning the igniter knob at the same time.
6.After you are sure the grill is lit preheat the grill for 30 minutes.

This was called purging the line or releasing the air out of the line.

Another thing your orifice could be clogged with spiders or dirt. If it is LP gas check to make sure your hose is not kinked.

Hollands are known for the slow cooking process and a Healthy way of cooking!

SOURCE: gas grill overheated

I might have an Idea to what happened. All grills have a drip pan, most all new grills have a drain for grease that falls from our savory meats. Well, if, (not saying that you haven't) but if, you have not cleaned the drip pan, there is still grease left over that gets absorbed by food droppings. IF this is the case, you had a ticking time bomb of a grease fire. The grill did not overheat, the grease caught fire. You said your grill was a year old; so the regulator did not go full blast and when they do go bad they do not let gas pass through.

Not trying to preach to no one because I have done it myself, never leave your gas grill on and unattended. I hate to say it but even the owners manual says it.

I hope I did not come off the wrong way and I hope this might give you an idea/thought of what happened.

I bet your grill gets no hotter than about 300 with the lid closed?

The tank has a built in safety feature. If a burner is left on when you open the valve on the tank, or turned on too soon immediately after opening the valve on the tank, the flow will be restricted. You need to turn all burners off, close the tank valve, disconnect the tank, reconnect the tank, open the tank valve, waqit a few seconds, open the burner valve and light. You'll get unrestricted flow and much better heat.

SOURCE: Gas grill caught fire

The anwer is not the one you want before Labor day cook-outs. Since the unit is under recall, go the manufacture's site, or any site specified in the recall notices, and follow the directions, to get replacement parts for all damaged parts from the fire, as well as the original defective parts. Hopefully you can take the unit in for exchange for a fully assembled one. Be polite but firm in wanting the units assembled gratis.

I am havine a problem getting the self cleaning working on my O'keefe & Merritt electric oven. I don't know the model, but I do know that it was purchased in 1978. I've used the self cleaning setting...

Keefe Merritt 12 6267 Manual Book

O & M was merged with what has become Frigidaire/Electrolux Home Products.

You can get parts from them.

The serial number for a built in wall oven from that era would be something like this : 11-6361-30/123

Electrolux's parts number is 800 599 7569. (Phone number)

If the oven needs replacing, Sears, Magic Chef, and Whirlpool offer something in this size range. (You need to measure the dimensions.)

You may need to "google" "O'Keefe & Merritt electric oven repair" plus your location. Electrolux's service department might provide a contact.

No antenna signal nor found channels for my area.

You'll need a better antenna to solve your problem. With the new digital broadcasting, signal strength is everything. With analog, a weak signal would give you a watchable but fuzzy picture. A weak signal with digital gives you nothing, or possibly a picture that freezes up or breaks into blocks (pixellation). The only cure is a better antenna, either an amplified indoor antenna or something outside.

Sad to say, there's no guarantee that will work. If you live too far from the station, or have hills, buildings or other obstructions that block the signal, you just may not be able to pick up some channels. In some areas people have found they get no reception at all.

At www.antennaweb.org there's a tool that will tell you what stations are around your area and how far. It's designed to help you figure out what kind of antenna you might need.

I have a double gas oven and no instructions

I have an O'Keefe & Merritt double oven gas stove. The model number is 72 7242 23. The upper oven is about the size of a large microwave and sits above the range burners. The lower (full-size) oven is below the burner unit and includes a broiler draw below it.
So, when you say, double oven, I wonder if you are just talking about the main oven with broiler drawer (both of which are below the burner unit.)

Mine was a builder-supplied appliance in the new house we purchased in 1986. The upper oven has never performed very well. And, yes the upper oven can only be used for baking.

I have an instruction manual for it, but it doesn't provide that much information. Getting parts for it is extremely difficult, since Tappan is no longer manufacturing this brand. (I've been trying to locate a flat oven ignitor for the upper oven and can't seem to find a replacement that's the same 6-1/3" length.) In the 1980s Tappan apparently purchased O'Keefe & Merritt and marketed this brand for several years. Models originally manufactured by O'Keefe & Merritt in the 1930s-1950s are considered collectible antique stoves!
