How old is it???? Does it have a read out that tells you what's wrong?????When is the last time you did a maintaince tune up on it???? Mine is fueled by propane and I changed the oil and plugs and it's been fine since....Sometimes it's the starter/ignition..I would do a complete tuneup first, then clear codes, then try starting it up manually....If that works put it back on auto..Good Luck

When you get a power outage from the area it's best to do a new tuneup .....I had to do that once when the neighborhood lost power....Doesn't make sense but sometimes it happens...Just do the plugs, oil, filter....

If there is no spark at the plug, the next course of action would be to test the magneto shutdown circuit and test the ignition magneto. I suspect the no spark condition would be a result of a bad ignition magneto which is a common issue. The magneto replacement involves disassembling the front of the engine. If you are not comfortable with this procedure, I would recommend contacting an authorized Generac service tech.

I have an 8KW Generac gas generator. We had a power outage and it didn't auto-start. ALARM - Overcrank msg. Started it manually. Weekly exercises are fine (It's cold and snowy here .. relevant?)

By "gas" I assume you mean gasoline? Overcrank means too many starter revolutions without engine run which agrees with no auto-start.

If gasoline, suggest you drain the fuel bowl and some of the tank(pint or so). Capture fuel into container. Then transfer to a transparent/glass container and let set a few minutes. Then look for a water line(fuel is lighter than water and will separate). Line high in jar means lots of water. If any sign of water and you need to clear the fuel system and tank. Then completely fill with FRESH fuel from a trusted source. Or if refueling too far, if you only use fuel from top of container that has sat for a few minutes, the water is on bottom and fuel on top.

One cylinder not firing on generator

If you have spark and compression and it not firing then you must not have fuel. the fuel is fed from the demand regulator thru the intake independent for each cylinder. Check the intake and make sure that the NG/LP pin is all the way to the NG side.

Small 7kw Generac has always sounded rough over the three years we've had it. Oil and plug are fine but lately, after warmup, engine seems to misfire and eventually shuts off during the normal weekly test...

If the generator is out of warranty, you can try spraying a short shot of ether into the intake of the generator as it is running rough. If the engine smoothes out for a few seconds, and returns back to original state, then it is likely running lean. Check the gas regulator (this is LP or natural gas I am assuming since it is standby), the vent may be clogged on the bottom of it.
