plug in the mp3 player to the computer using a usb cable provided for you when you bought the mp3 player. then it will recognize that as new hardware and it will install the software for it. then you can synch it with rhapsody or windows media player 11. its simple. once you plugged it into your computer open up windows media player then click on copy to cd or a device (on the older versions) or synch (newer version) and then it will copy all of your selected songs into the player for you
This player is a little goofy. The normal method to synchronize is through Windows Media Player. But if you go for the Rhapsody subscription, you have to also sync the device through Rhapsody.
Please copy and paste the following links into your web browser address bar, and then click Go or hit your Enter key. When prompted, choose the option to Save the file to your desktop.
1. Double click on My Computer so that you can see it on your screen.
2. Turn the player off.
3. On the top of the player is a Hold switch, move it to the right (toward the headphone jack) so you see the orange colour.
4. On the left hand side of the player is a Record button, press and hold it while connecting the player to the computer. Continue holding the Record button until you see a new icon under "My Computer" called "16MB FORMAT". Once you see that icon you may release the Record button.
5. Double click the RHAPSODY-1.0.1.47 file you downloaded earlier and open it. You will need WinZIP or WINRAR to "unpack" it. Inside you will see a file named PP5022.mi4 drag this file onto the 16MB Format in My Computer mentioned before.
6. Double Click on the Sansa.rar and open it. Drag the Sansa.fmt file into the 16MB Format as well (this forces the device format and erase all data)
6. Disconnect the player and look at the screen. Several things will be displayed, and when you see Key Lock, System Shutdown, move the Hold switch on the top back to the left.
7. Turn the player on and watch the screen. If you see a Refresh Database Fail error, you will need to follow steps 1-7 again until you do not get the error. If it does not work the first time, it could take up to 3 times for it to work.

If your device is indeed a Rhapsody branded version, the recovery tool you have WILL NOT WORK.
You need to download the Rhapsody version firmware, located here;
http://www.sandisk.com/Assets/File/Downloads/firmware/rhapsody-1.0.2.21.zip
Then put the device into recovery mode:
- power device off (press and hold power for 20 seconds)
- slide the hold button into hold
- press and hold record button while connecting device to computer (keep holding it until you see New Hardware Found on PC)
Then "unzip" the software from the link, inside you will see PP5022.mi4. Open up My Computer, in there you will see 16MB format, drag and drop the pp5022.mi4 file into this drive.
Unplug the device and allow it to restart. DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS until it is complete.
If the issue persists, try it again. It may take 3 or 4 tries. If that doesnt work, you need to format the device. Hit me back and ill tell you how to do that.
Best of Luck.
