The fat red wire will go to the input side of the solenoid along with the trim power on the same 5/16ths lug. the black is not power it is ground and the starter wire should be yellow with a red tracer, the start wire is connected to one of the two 1/8th inch connections and the ground goes to the other.
For future questions include your year and serial number. I could be way off if this is a 1970s model.
It is not recommended to operate any electrical device on a boat with the battery switch in the "off" position, as doing so could damage the electrical system or the device itself.
However, if you want to be able to operate the tilt and trim switch on your 2018 350 Mercury Verado with the battery switch off, you could install a separate battery or power source for the trim system. This would require some rewiring and installation work, and it may not be feasible depending on the configuration of your boat and engine.
If you are not experienced with electrical work, it is recommended to consult with a qualified marine technician or electrician for advice and assistance with this modification.
Locate the serial number plate by looking on your motor's transom bracket; the plate will have "Mercury Marine" written on the top. The serial number is the top number on the plate. The number directly beneath this is the year it was manufactured.
The year will be determined by the number of cylinders,,,
A 4 cyl. is a 1986 .
75 - 4 Cyl.
1986
ELPTO, ELO
A197882 - B249479 = U.S. Serial Numbers
A70708 = Canadian serial numbers
it normal would be on top of the motor were all your electrical comes into the motor .you would see 50 amp fuses next to them there should be 4 round black contactors that have all your wires from your tilt motor and your trim motor connected to them. but if it still works its not the contactors .try this have some one pull up on the outdrive while you hit the switch . if it goes up its your tilt motor has water in it or was damaged by hitting something . water damage is fixable only if its fresh water .salt water you need not waist your time . buy a new one .and if it is fresh water ,if you no how to take stuff apart and putt it back togeather again...the tilt motor need to be cleaned ,up and new seal kit put in it .it should work fine again .
You may want to check service bulletin #2002-052. Some of these motors
supply too much voltage to the trim switch at the throttle lever and
that trim switch stops working. There is an add-on harness #586806 that
fixes this. If you can still tilt and trim the motor at the trim switch
that is built into the motor housing this is likely the problem.
If they all don't work and you checked the fuse and it's good it is the window switch. Pretty easy fix, get a door panel tool at a parts store, unscrew all of the screws for the door pull, door handle cover, and what ever else is screwed on. Use the door panel tool to pop off the cover and the switch will then be accessible.
