Hi
If you can't plug it in to a Mac or PC and format the drive then it may have been damaged by a sudden drop or knock.
The WD Passport is only a 2.5" drive mechanism. It runs off 5 volts. Therefore it is slow & frail.
The better drives are the full size 3.5" that run off 12 volt & 5 Volt power supply. They spin faster so their access speed is faster. But..These drives are more robust. WD Passport gives you portability but they are frail and not good for long term use.
When you pull as many apart as I have... you soon notice the difference. I dropped one about a foot only 1 week after purchase. That was it... It would no longer work.
If you need robust & portable, get one of the new SSD drives.
There are no moving parts to break. It's totally semiconductor solid state memory. But they are not cheap
Good Luck

This error comes up when the drive is formated by a different operating system, and yours can not read it. You will need to format it to be read by your current system, but you will lose any data on it. The only other option is to find out what it was formated for, Windows or MAC, and hooking it up to that computer.
With a Windows system, once you hook it up, open explorer (not internet explorer). You will see that drive on the right side, right click on it and choose the format option. Once it has been formated, you will be able to use it.
