Hi
If you can't plug it in to a Mac or PC and format the drive then it may have been damaged by a sudden drop or knock.
The WD Passport is only a 2.5" drive mechanism. It runs off 5 volts. Therefore it is slow & frail.
The better drives are the full size 3.5" that run off 12 volt & 5 Volt power supply. They spin faster so their access speed is faster. But..These drives are more robust. WD Passport gives you portability but they are frail and not good for long term use.
When you pull as many apart as I have... you soon notice the difference. I dropped one about a foot only 1 week after purchase. That was it... It would no longer work.
If you need robust & portable, get one of the new SSD drives.
There are no moving parts to break. It's totally semiconductor solid state memory. But they are not cheap

Good Luck
Trevor

SOURCE: WD 1TB My Passport Essential is unusable.

This error comes up when the drive is formated by a different operating system, and yours can not read it. You will need to format it to be read by your current system, but you will lose any data on it. The only other option is to find out what it was formated for, Windows or MAC, and hooking it up to that computer.
With a Windows system, once you hook it up, open explorer (not internet explorer). You will see that drive on the right side, right click on it and choose the format option. Once it has been formated, you will be able to use it.

Western Digital removable HD devise not found

For Western Digital Passport make sure you use the prigina;l USB cable or a replacement. They are not all the same. WD uses a propriatary cable with an extra power line I believe.

WD My Passport Essential 250GB USB2.0 is not working in WIn 98SE

Try using a Usb 2 cable "The one that came with the WD My Passport " And put it directly to the PC...
In some cases, Like mine, I used an extended cable + the cable that came with the "WD My Passport" and i got the same problem ..
So i simply removed the extended cable and put the put "WD My Passport " directly to the PC with its own cable and the problem was solved to me ..

Can I use my passport essential 2.0 to backup my work computer as well as my home computer?

You can use your WD Passport to sychronize data on multiple computers, you just need to set up the other computer name (e.g. "Work computer")using the software.

WARNING: Do not think that theyourWD Passport, using the WD Sync software, is a
backup drive; it is NOT !

As per the documentation with this device:
"synchronization software is intended to synchronize the data from a
computer to the drive (WD Passport) and SHOULD NOT be used as backup
software. To use this software properly, we advise that you do not wipe or
erase the data from the internal hard drive (computer) and resynchronize, as
this will cause the data that WD Sync stored to the Passport to be deleted."

This is why you are hearing so many people saying that they are deleting the
WD Sync software, reformatting, and using the WC Passport as a true backup
drive where you can actually see the files that you are backing up, rather
than a bunch of unrecognizable sync files that likely don't have all the files that you thought you "backed up".
