If you have touch tone service, the phone is ready to use as soon as the battery is charged. If you have pulse (rotary) service, you'll need to change the dial modee• Press
PROG.
• Press o runtil the screen displays
DIAL MODE:
and the current settings• Press
SELECT.
The current setting blinks • Press or to select
TONE
or

SOURCE: Switching from pulse to tone dialing (there is no switch on the base unit)

hold the select button down a few seconds until you'll see a 'tn' on the readout. this sets it to tone. hold it down again and it will set back to 'Pu' for pulse. i figured this out by accident. the losers at vtech never answered my question.

SOURCE: can not break through dial tone on either hand set

After going around and around and around with YOU people, I finally gave up and took the damned phone back to the store where I bought it. The first store wouldn't take it back, because I had the receipt (which was from early September, 2008 - which was past the 90 days), so I took it to their other location and told them that I lost the receipt. I got a brand new replacement. If the new one should fail to work, I'll take it back again WITHOUT the receipt, and upgrade to another brand. Thanks anyway.

I have a Nortel Jazz 420 and it suddenly turned on pulse mode instead tone mode. How could I turn it on tone mode ? Pierre

Try this

Tone dialing allows your telephone to communicate with devices and services that respond to tone signals, such as answering machines, fax, or automatic switchboards. Want to learn how to switch from pulse to tone dialing on the Nortel phone? Follow these simple steps.

While on an active line, or after selecting the line, press # and the phone will switch from pulse to tone dialing. After you hang up the phone, your phone will return to pulse dialing. You may repeat these steps as needed.

Phone went from touch tone to pulse. . .

Hello,

Read the manual to reconfigure that option. (Look for Setup button on the phone) I can't guess what model you have. On older phones one could find a switch on the the phone to flip between Tone and Pulse.

Sorry I could not be of much help.
