Why is my Craftsman lawn tractor so hard to start?

My craftsman lawn tractor turns over fine but won't start until after many attempts. It starts when I begin to smell gas. I've already changed the spark plug but that didn't help. The battery is new. Once it starts and warms up, it will start with the first turn of the key. This just started happening a couple of weeks ago. Thank you.

Had same problem with YTS4000. With throttle forward to start, check that the choke is fully closed. If not, loosen cable clamp that secures the throttle cable and slide cable housing till choke is applied . Retighten the screw that holds cable housing & turn key. Should start ok now. Hope this saves you a few bucks in service fees. PS// watch linkage movement while pushing throttle forward for indication to adjust choke application.

Testimonial: "Thanks to all for your input. I think it is a matter of adjusting the valves. I installed an inline gas shut off valve and changed the oil and it starts up first time every time now."

Change to a lighter weight oil for the colder months. Did you notice how thick 30 wt oil pours when temps drop? When it thickens like that, there is resistance when the stater has to rotate the crankshaft during the initial start. Once the engine warms, the oil thins allowing for easy restart.

Most likely needs valves adjusted. If you can give model number off of the engine, i can try to find the manual or instructions on how to do this for you.

SOURCE: 10 year old Craftsman Lawn Tractor won't start

I had a similar problem and found that the float was hanging up on the wall of the carb fuel chamber. I sanded lightly the outer edge of the float and never had the problem again. That was 3 years ago. Having a different problem now. After setting overnight in cold weather, 20's, engine turns over very slowly even with a new battery. Engine starts, but barely. Once running, everything seems fine. After shutoff, engine restarts quickly. Next morning, same thing happens. Anyone have any thoughts?

Back side of dashboard. See manual.

To start, typical rider mower requires BRAKE ON, PTO OFF, and Transmission NEUTRAL. Some require operator in seat.

I started my craftsman 20 hp mower and my son had a fall and I popped the clutch out too fast, killed the mower, and now it won't start. What did I break by popping the clutch too hard?

I would start checking the clutch cable and see if it actually broke or if there is another issue with it like you have stretch the clutch cable.

My craftsman 18.0 42" lawn

First check to make sure you can turn each blade by hand, with the mower off. If neither blade spindle is frozen remove the deck and make sure all the pulleys move freely and function like they should. The cable should have been operating a spring loaded pulley arm that applied tension to the deck belt to make the blades function. Some times build up with block that from moving or rust will make it stick.

I have Craftsman 42" lawn tractor with the automatic transmission. It runs fine but it is not pulling a grade now. The belt seems tight, what could be the problem?

As you attempt the incline grab the clutch pedal with your heel and pull it towards you if it starts pulling correctly you have a belt problem . If it makes no difference you are having hydro pump problems
