You can find some serial to USB converters but they are hard to find. Try Ebay or www.shrevesystems.com.

does your work have a password to log into the network? If so you may not be able to use your laptop unless they let you. Talk to your IT's at work.

SOURCE: printer offline message

I had this problem once too, after I installed the latest drivers It worked.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=219&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3192753
The CD you are installing it from might have outdated drivers on it, so these should fix the problem.
Also using the printer's software and not your mac's could help also, download it here:

I think there are 6 ways (at least?) to connect this printer:
(1) Direct to Mac (or PC) via USB Cable (2) Direct to Mac (or PC) via Ethernet Crossover Cable(3) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC also via Ethernet to router/switch(4) Ethernet to router/switch, with Mac/PC via WiFi (802.11 wireless)(5) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC via Ethernet to router/switch(6) WiFi to router, with Mac/PC also via WiFi.
As (1) should be simplest, tried this first. First document would print instantly and completely, next doc would hang in queue with unexpected msg, "Printer is offline." Only way to print 2nd doc was to power cycle (off-on) the printer. This problem occurred whether 2nd doc was sent to printer before or after 1st doc had printed. Tried 2nd USB cable, tried new driver, tried reinstalling printer; same problem. Spoke to both Samsung and Apple support, including both on a conference call; never got this to work and never clarified if problem was in printer hardware/software, driver, or something else. Both companies now showing this issue as unresolved.
Nothwithstanding USB problem, did succeed in modes (4) and (6), although custom wireless config needed since my network does not broadcast SSID and requires an encryption password. Procedure required connecting first via Ethernet, obtaining Configuration Report by holding down orange button for 5 seconds, then using browser to connect to the printer's IP address. Also required different driver for wireless config (as opposed to USB).
Bottom line: What seemed simple - USB direct connect - proved unworkable, but wired and wireless network config works fine.

Printer doesn't respond via USB only WiFi

As my helper partner states, I quite agree but I would also use a different USB which the one you're using might be damaged, use another USB station cause maybe its also damaged. But if it states that the printer is offline...it will never print because its not selected as your active Printer. Actually you are sending the printing jobs to that printer wich is not active or recognized.

if you are using Windows XP perform the steps below:
1. Click Start --> Printers and Fax.
2. Right click the printer icon and check the following:
a. Check whether the All-in-One is set as default printer.
b. Ensure that the there is a check mark on the "Use printer online". If you have the Use printer offline, make it online by selecting the option.

Says its ready till i try and print

Dell printer drivers try to 'phone home' with Ink usage stats .. even if you select 'no' when asked, they still try to access the Internet ..on install the driver modifies Microsoft Vista Firewall settings to permit this ...

So if you recently installed a non-Microsoft Firewall eg. ZomeAlarm your print driver will be denied access to the web and will refuse to print.

Note that 'deny' is different from 'time-out' ... to test turn off your wireless (or remove the ethernet cable) and ONLY THEN turn off your firewall - if it now starts printing you have your solution (go into Zone Alarm and Enable all Dell & MS print related software access to the Internet).

DO NOT browse the web with your Firewall turned off !!!!
