We recently had a shortlived, yet powerful thunder storm sweep the area and all of a sudden my subwoofer started making this strange humming sound that would not go away even if I turned the power off. After a few minutes the humming stopped but then the sub wouldn't even turn on. No lights, no sound...NOTHING.
It is connected to a surge protector so I don't understand why it wasn't PROTECTED!?!?
And why is the sub the only thing that got damaged? I have so many other electrical appliances that were apparently spared!
Does anyone have ANY IDEA what might have gone wrong? Maybe a fuse replacement?
Do you think it is even financially practical to fix? I love this sub and I would hate to throw it out!
Please help!
This amp does not carry an internal fuse.
The amplifier chip TDA7294 is most likely blown. Remove the amp from the back of the subwoofer and use a multimeter to test the speaker wires. You shouldn't have more than a few millivolts (AC) at output. The humming is at approx. 30 volts AC - the power supply voltage.
The amplifer has broken down and what you are hearing is the oscillation of the voltage supplied to the chip.
I've fixed mine by replacing the TDA7294 chip on the amplifier board. This requires much skill to desolder the chip without burning the board, and installing a new one. I have previous electornics experience so this was pretty easy for me - not the same for a novice.
The chip you will need is the TDA7294 (V) for vertical. I will eventually post a DIY on my site when I get around to it. For now if you need help email me at fixya AT iyah DOT net.
Try the fuse first then if no problems alls good , but if it still hums it could be the crossover board inside , if you love your sub like i love mine you will just replace the crossover if need be . Smirf 617
Any electrical store or hardware store will sell them it will only probably be a 10 or 20 watt fuse that will cost about 50 cents Smirf617
glad to help . you have made me get my 12inch audio x out and get her going sweet again , just about finished now as i type , will always help people enjoy their musical experience . SMIRF 617
On my sub i have a mains fuse on the outside rear its a black plastic screw that you unscrew to reveal the fuse, the others should be on the plate amp itself you will have to unscrew the metal plate amp from the case and remove the plate amp from the case , inside you should see some fuses [plate amp is the metal thing with all the switches on ] STATING THE OBVIOUS HERE BUT MAKE SURE YOU DISSCONNECT POWER AND SUB LINE FROM THE AMP . Have Fun Smirf617

This might be a stupid question, but where can I find a replacement fuse? Will any electronic store carry them or do I have to special order it?
Yes maybe I'm blind but I cant seem to locate the fuse lol.
Is it inside the box? Or is it on the heavy smaller box that unscrews from the back?
Sorry if this is a dumb questions lol.
