Boiler ignition failer

Boiler ignition sequence keeps failing. Takes about 3-4 tries before stepping from 1 (igniting) to 2 (lit). Only seems to happen when temps are severe (in the negs in MN the past couple of weeks). Sometimes it ignites, sometimes it doesn't!

Try adjusting the gas to air mixture and flow rate. I don't work well in very cold weather, either. I think that's fairly typical. Even a diesel engine is difficult to start in cold cold weather. Perhaps heating the room where the boiler is would help or at lest insulate the room well. Including stopping any drafts that may be causing a windy condition in or around the combustion chamber.

Sime boiler pilot light

Sounds like an old boiler. It is not on timer and has to be lit manually. Push in the gas button and hold and push the sprung ingnition button to greate spark. Continue to hold in gas button 1-2 mins and release. The pilot light should then stay on. The flame will have heated the sensor in the combustion chamber and the boiler thinks that there is a flame and will allow the main gas jets to light when demanded . If the flame does not stay on clean the sensor prongs with emery cloth but do wait until they are cooled. You have open up the combustion chamber for access
The 1-2 mins above varies

On A.O. Smith water heater model BTH 199 100 where is the heat sensor rod located ?

Parts list:
http://www.hotwater.com/lit/partslists/197728-004.pdf
Flame rod, flame sensor sits next to igniter inside combustion chamber. This can be cleaned with sandpaper. Do not touch with fingers. Purpose of flame rod is to detect whether ignition has caused actual, sustainable fire inside the combustion chamber.
If sensor is bad, or no ignition is detected after 2-3 attempts, then 'no ignition' error is given.
Bad gas control valve, bad-or-dirty flame rod-sensor, low gas pressure, misaligned rod, dirty combustion parts, etc

I have a halstead finest gold combi when I turn the boiler on the boiler goes into its ignition sequence when it comes to ignite the boiler fires but after the igniter stops the boiler cuts out completely...

Difficult to get too specific without knowing if you have gas or oil. Also, I am going under the assumption you mean the burner shuts down, not the whole heating system. That being said, all heating appliances have whats called a safety curcuit. Each control has the ability to shut down if certain critera are not met. There is a sensor that senses light down the blast tube. If no light is sensed in a predetermined time period, then the sensor cuts power to the burner. This stops delivery of fuel so if it does ignite you wont blow up.
(I suspect that the ignitor and burner shut down simultainously.)
It may be the sensor (cad cell eye) is doing its job, however why is the question. Could be a number of things including the fuel delivery, ignition, improper air adjustment, etc.
No qualified professional should diagnose a problem unless they are in front of the appliance. I recommend you find a licensed qualified heating techician. Hope this helps.

Flashing red light on Worcester 24i junior combi boiler

Pressure is ok? at 1 bar or above
I think on this one there should be a reset button [red] on the left hand top of the casing - or lower the control panel [ phillips screw on each side] and the button is on the left of the base plate. Press this and try the heating.or hot tap
P.S. if you're on a prepayment meter check you have gas.
