That's a defect if you want ice you will have to continue doing that sorry
There are tabs on the ejection tray that overlap and bind keeping the tray from moving forward. Either position the tray precisely in the center until you find the sweet spot, then never move your ice maker again. The other option is to shave either the tabs or the top of the ejection tray. I shaved the tabs and my unit working properly again.
To remove the ejection tray:
Remove the back cover (6 screws on the bottom of the unit).
Remove the top cover (4 screws now available under the top cover).
Cycle the unit and unplug the power to it when the tray is in the fill with water position, the ejection tray will be all the way forward.
Remove the 2 metal pins holding the ejection tray to the main unit. Be careful since you are working with plastic parts. Since I was both repairman and photographer the needle nose pliers are not positioned correctly to force the pin out in the first photo, it will need to be almost vertical to avoid the tray assembly.

If I were to do this again that would be my choice.
I used small wire cutters then shaved with a knife to finish the job.
Reassemble and test.
