If the display went out then the optical cable probably became frayed. If this is the case then a technician might be able to fix it but generally it will be cheaper just to get a brand new phone.

my Samsung A800 also lost its inner display recently. When I open the phone, the inner display lights up but fails to show any image. Outer display is mostly OK, once it had trouble to "lock" the image and after opening and closing the phone a few times the outer display showed the image with light and dark bits inverted. Switching phone off and on restores the inner display most of the time, but the image only lasts until I close the phone.
