You won't loose your data Why wold you think you would? once data is written to a hard drive it remains there until it is removed be a user, it works on the same principlea a floppy, the magnetic coating on the surface of the anodized disks inside of the HD are written to and retain memory of the data, the only things in a computer that won't keep their data are the RAM chips which need electricity running through them to work.

Installed 2T Hitachi drive with controller as secondary drive. Devices show both working correctly. But XP doesn't recognize it. How do I get XP to recognize it?

This problem can easily be fixed. It is caused by your HDD not being formatted. Go to Start> Right click on "my computer" and select manage from the box that pops up. In the window that pops up then, click on Storage > Disk management on the left hand side. Then right click on the drive you installed, and click format. You should probably format as NTFS.

Good luck. Try searching on eBay, and use "contact seller" to confirm that they are selling _exactly_ what you are wanting to buy.

Based on normal configurations, you should make sure that the pin settings on your main boot drive is set to master, and then make sure that your Deskstar is set to slave. If that doesn't work, then you might have a Bios setup issue. Let me know.
