Does not allow fuel past the fuel solenoid on my ex4500 generator which has been sitting for about 9 months.

6 months --check for spark but probably fuel bad or carb/fuel filter gummed up

The engine isn't getting enough fuel. Your carburetor needs cleaning. Generators are notorious for gummed carburetors because of the ethanol alcohol in today's gasoline and the generator sitting idle for weeks, months & even years without use wicks moisture into the fuel. Drain your carburetor of gasoline, & remove the carburetor. Clean your carburetor with Carburetor Cleaner spray & make sure the float needle valve & seat are clear of gum & varnish. To help prevent this from happening again, shut off the fuel petcock at the fuel tank and run the generator carburetor out of fuel before you put it away. It'll help keep the carburetor free of gunk. Also, replace the old fuel in the tank with fresh fuel every 3-6 months.

The fuel filter screws directly into the pump, it is a small in line filter

No it isn't a stator issue a complete check of the ignition and control needs looking at.

If the generator is an auto stop/start type for standby use, it would seem those solenoids are the reason why fuel isn't getting through. It would be a fairly sensible method of stopping the engine remotely.

An auto start/stop generator would need a battery for starting purposes, a battery that would presumably also provide current to energise those solenoids and allow fuel to flow.

I suggest you refer to the instruction manual in the first instance...

I just got a new one for my tank. Had to order 3 as they have a $5.00 minimum order.

during crank power is applied to the fuel shutoff solenoid on the bottom of the carb. if the unit has been sitting with fuel in the carb there may be varnish build up in the solenoid. remove the solenoid make sure it moves freely, and there is voltage to operate the solenoid. good luck, Ken

All generators need to be run once a month. All things from the tank to the and including the carb will get gummed up with dried out fuel. I have a whole house generator and a 5500 watt gen set on my motor home. I keep fresh fuel in the stand alone house generator in California in case of a bad earthquake. I drain the gas after every run and keep all vehicles full of fuel just in case. Run gen sets at least once a month or pay pay pay!!

I'm KindDa surprised that I have had no response in a week. I had high hopes for FixYa so I tried it. Only correspondance so far is from FixYa asking for money. Oh well, such is life.

My son is wondering if the problem could be caused by a slightly plugged up carburetor, running too lean, so when the choke opens beyond a certain point the mixture is too far off and it stalls. He was also thinking that an incorrect float level might produce symptoms like I have described.

Note: I have noticed a generic "canned" response addressing similar stalling problems. I am curious if these people all paid for a response and then received the same generic response which was already available for free by searching FixYa.
