Lcd screen stuck in external screen mode

How to use the function (Fn) keys on the keyboard - ThinkPad T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p, T43, T43p

Switching the display output location.
Switch between the computer display and an external monitor. If an external monitor is attached, the computer output is displayed in the following three patterns by turns:
  • External monitor (CRT display)
  • Computer display and external monitor (LCD + CRT display)
  • Computer display (LCD)
Notes:
  • For any operating system other than Windows 2000 or Windows XP, no additional procedure is needed. Just press Fn+F7.
  • This function is not supported if different desktop images are displayed on the computer display and the external monitor (the Extend desktop function).
  • This function does not work while a DVD movie or a video clip is playing.
To enable this function in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, the following procedure is needed:
  1. When you log on to Windows 2000 and Windows XP for the first time, press Fn + F7 and select a display-switching function in the Initial setup window. Since in Windows 2000 and Windows XP multiple users can log on to a single operating system by using different user IDs, each user needs to select the function in the initial setup window when logging on for the first time.
  2. If the Fn + F7 key combination have been assigned to a presentation scheme function, start Presentation Director, and change the settings.

Reliability and Performance Monitor
Windows Vista contains an advanced reporting tool called the "Reliability and Performance Monitor", which allows you to check your system for any performance and reliability problems from the system logs and real-time monitoring.

Tips, advice and technical details of many problems that could be effecting your system are all generated within 60 seconds. It is surprisingly useful, even for advanced users.

To start the application, load “perfmon /report” from the run box (Press WINDOWS KEY + R to load this):

attachment.php?attachmentid=64&d=1204306867
The Reliability and Performance Monitor will then spend 60 seconds analysing your computer:

attachment.php?attachmentid=63&thumb=1&d=1204306867
Once the testing is complete, the tool provides a list of all of the problems and relevant notices about your PC. It is worth reading through the list to see if there are any serious problems that you should rectify. An example report is shown below:

attachment.php?attachmentid=62&thumb=1&d=1204306867
Most advanced users will be able to track down the problems and improve the overall performance and/or reliability of the operating system.

How to analyze windows 7 installation log files for cause of BSOD.

  1. Download and install the Debugging Tools for Windows from this link. My installation is a 32bit one, so I downloaded the 32 bit version 6.10.3.233.
  2. Download and extract the debugging wizard (debugwiz.exe) from Windows BBS. There is a note on the site saying this tool does not work properly with Vista 64 bit. My guess is it probably does not work with Windows 7, either.
  3. The debug wizard relies on a registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\DebuggingTools to find the binary files for the debugging tools. This key is not generated by the debugging tools installer any more. You have to enter the key manually using regedit.exe .
  4. Right click on the debugwiz.exe extracted in step 2 and select Run as administrator.
  5. Click on the Browse button and pick the memory dump file.
  6. There is one more step before you try to generate the analysis log. The Command String is not correct. Check the Advanced checkbox and change the string from c:tempdebuglog.txt to c:debuglog.txt .
  7. Click on Generate log and the analysis log will be generated and saved in c:debuglog.txt .
Ok, you now have a analysis log, but it’s filled with jargons. What can you do? I usually only look for the line that starts with “Probably caused by”. In this case, the acutal line is
Probably caused by : memory_corruption ( nt!MiFindNodeOrParent+5 )
I know then the cause is probably due to bad memory module. On most cases, it’s usually a system file or a driver. You have to find the proper update for the offending file or uninstall the software which uses that file to fix your system.
