Ray,
This is correct. It is either the oil pump or pressure switch. In any case, both have to be visually inspected and/or replaced as it sometimes is not easy to tell which part is malfunctioning.

I hope this helps, and if it has, please do rate me. Thank you and have a great NFL Sunday!

SOURCE: Check Gauge light going on and off

One of 3 things can cause this behavior of the oil pressure light going on and off: (1) oil level might be a little low... double check and make sure your oil is porperly topped off; (2) sensor is defective... which might require replacement; (3) oil pump problem... this can be an obstruction of some kind of the oil pump. If there is a strainer, which is typical, there might be sludge or something else obstructing the entry to the oil pump, thus, resulting in lower pressure output. It is rare, not impossible, for the oil pump itself to be defective... but again, very rare. If the issue is at the oil pump, it willmost commonly be an obstruction. Try having the engine flushed professionally. There are auto service centers with this capability. It is probably the most affordable first step to take. If after a flush the problem persists, then have the sensor checked.

SOURCE: OIL PRESSURE LIGHT COMES ON AND PRESSURE GOES TO 0 ON GAUGE

Any time the oil pressure is 0 you take a chance of locking up the motor. The only way to know for sure is to put a pressure gauge in the oil pressure sending unit port on the engine and see what the pressure really is. At that point you will either have the peace of mind in the knowledge that the sending unit is really bad and needs replacement or you can then contact a repair shop and tell them what your testing has revealed. I wouldn't drive or run your truck while the oil pressure is at zero.

Good luck

SOURCE: Come to stop 99 Ram oil pressure drops to 0 check gauges light.

Change the oil! The 318Cu in V8 (5.2 liter) engine has a problem with sludge build up on the oil pump pickup tube screen. This engine requires oil changes at or before 3500 miles with a high detergent oil.

Oil Pressure Drops

Did the mechanic drive the truck with a mechanical gauge to check the pressure ? The engine bearings or oil pump could be worn enough to allow pressure to drop at idle after it warms up.

My check gauges light is on, oil hands goes over to zero, moves up, light goes off, when it drops back to zero, gauge light comes back on.

Well the warning light is supposed to come on if any of the gauges display a dangerous condition, such as no oil pressure.
You may have a faulty sending unit for the gauge, or a wiring problem, or the engine may actually be loosing oil pressure when the gauge drops.
You could replace the sending unit as a test, or have someone check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

95 caprice check gage light goes on oil pressure drops but when i press the gas it goes back up and light goes off any ideas

1st, do not drive this until you are sure the oil pressure is ok, have the pressure verified with a mechanical test gauge, if it is ok the sending unit for the electric gauge is likely defective.

I would bet its the oil pressure sending unit. Very common on jeeps and chryslers. It is located right above the oil filter and is an easy DIY project and fairly inexpensive as well.

2000 Ford F-150. The oil temp warning light came on and the oil pressure gauge dropped to zero. While accelerating, the pressure gauge goes back to normal and the warning light goes out. No drivability...

Make sure the oil level is correct. If the engine bearings are getting worn, the oil pump is worn or it's screen plugged, that can cause low-RPM weak oil pressure. Try running with 'high mileage' oil at your next oil change and always replace the filter. At some point, you may need to consider overhauling or replacing the engine. Good luck!

Oil prsseure

Before you dig into a new oil pump, are you using the correct viscosity oil, has it been a long time since your last oil change? If your oil is begining to thin out, it could have that effect. Or on some older vehicles that is normal, as long as there is oil pressure there it means parts are getting lubed. But if it happens to drop to 0psi look out. If still worried go ahead and replace the pump but I think you'll be just fine.
