SOURCE: generator runs producing no power

Hi, remove the electric control panel & check the wiring as sometimes we have seen the wires coming off the voltage change over switches.
Also some of these units you can check the connections in the rear of the alternator & if it has brushes that they are not stuck.
Another problem we have had is the trip switches have went faulty but still switch operates ok, they need to be checked with a probe type tester for conductivety.

SOURCE: generator runs, but produces no power

If it's still under warranty take it back to the retailer and tell them it quit working - don't offer any other information.

If you must fix the E/G yourself - On the generator there's a cover on the back; take the cover off so that the back of the windings are exposed. You should see 4 to 6 diodes mounted to the rotor and stator...those diodes are most likely burned out because of temperature failure, due to overload. You have to take them out to isolate them...they should read .6 Ohms one way; reverse the leads and they slhould read about 1.2 Ohms. If there shorted you'll read 0 Ohms and open infinety.

Anyway, replace those diodes and you should re-establish your field winding voltage which develops you A/C output.

Good Luck,
Mike...

SOURCE: no output from my generator

Check the capacitor in the generator head. Will onpen or short cause loss of excitation voltage. Just checked my GENERAC ( no output) and sure enough the cap is shorted.

Husky 5000 watt generator quit producing power.

You could have a bad circuit breaker button. Replace that and see what happens.

Pramac any ideas why is my Pramac S12000 3 Phase Generator is only producing 26 volts. It was working fine at the full 400 yesterday. It is just over 2 years old but has only operated for about 40 hou

The first thing I would look for would be internal fuses blown. This sounds like a 460 volt 12,000 watt industrial generator and you probably should call the installing contractor for service. My 15,000 watt generator is over 30 years old and has less than 700 hours on it and those are mostly test-run hours.

Generator was running fine and then the electrical output quit while the engine was running.

Sounds like you did overload the capacity of the generator. What has happened is that the generator was happily running away producing the electricity required for approximately an hour and then an appliance such as an air conditioner, furnace, refrigerator, water heater, or similar large amperage draw fixture decided it was time to kick on for its cycle, or perhaps two or three of them kicked on at the same time, thereby raising the amperage requirement beyond the capability of the generator. All heavy duty appliances run at a given amperage but when they kick on for a cycle they draw almost 50 percent or more amps. Generators rated at 6000 amps or less will not power an entire home or business. When using this size of generator, disable some of your electrical items in the home by unplugging or switching off, and only connect the most important items needed for emergency use. A 3500 watt generator will only run a few lights and a television, plus only one appliance. This means that you could plug in the refrigerator and run it until it has gotten cold enough, then unplug it & connect the furnace or air conditioner or water heater so that they can do there job. Eventually you will be able to rotate through each appliance in turn, and hope the power will return soon. Your generator will likely have blown a capacitor, resistor or some similar repairable item. Some good quality generators will have an overload breaker installed, that trips before doing any damage and all that is needed is to find it and reset it, in order to continue using the generator.

My generator runs fine but quit producing pwer. all cords are fine and tight, breakers are not fliped.

Hi Kenneth,You might need to flash your generator, I recommend the drill method. Here is the link to an article on how to do it. This is a very educational read and the process shouldn't take you longer than 5 minutes, I hope it works for you. Here is the link http://www.endtimesreport.com/dead_gen.html Good luck, Michael Burke

5500 generator stopped producing eletric after

First check with the dealer and see if it is still under warranty. If it is not, make sure nothing is blocking the air flow around where the control modules are located. This could cause the voltage regulator and other electronic parts to overheat. Next check the brushes and make sure they are free of any dust or build up preventing them from making contact.

If everything is OK the next thing I would do is change the voltage regulator.

Gererator stops producing power

This sounds like a "flying open" in the rotor. Over time a small part of the wire that winds around the rotor has gotten cracked just enough to open up when it's warm and being pulled on by the force of the rotor spinning. To test this further, take the wires off the brushes and connect an ohm meter across them then run the generator, if you see the ohm meter indicate an open circuit you've found the problem. This can be repaired but it means removing the rotor and finding the weak spot in the winding. You could replace the rotor for a couple of hundred dollars or get a new generator.

Carl

Engine runs but won't generate any electricity

Sometimes the generator loses the magnetic field that allows it to produce power. Do a Google search on "flashing a generator field". There are many ways to do it, but I would recommend doing some reading before trying it. Your "dead" generator could produce hazardous voltage once it comes back to life.

Also, before trying any of this, make sure the circuit breakers on the generator (if equipped) are not tripped.

Good luck and be careful!
