The unit turns on but the fan won't blow. Is it the fan motor?

If the blower motor runs in the off position, check the fan relay.

check ac control unit if you replaced blower module and if your sure fan works

Check your blower motor resistor connection.Turn switch and fan on then wiggle the resistor pigtail fan should turn on if not replace resistor.These get to hot and usally melt the pigtail and loose their connection.

What I would do is yank the innards out and look for signs of why the motor won't turn. I would oil the motor using zoomspout oil. If it is original to the unit and the compressor is ok I would say the capacitor is fine. If it is a replacement fan motor already in there take a look at it's replacement cap. They swell up and fail. Look for trash jamming the motor blade, or the motor mount itself could be broken . Usually their are 3 motor mounts. It only take one motor mount broken to bind up the motor.

Check the t-stat to make sure that the "fan" switch is st to auto. If not the fan is in the "on" position and is always on. Otherwise, It sounds like your "Central Air" is a packaged unit(Furnace and air all one unit outside the home) and the fan relay inside the unit is stuck. This need to be replaced. It is the rectangular unit with the leads from the fan motor attached to it.

Good observations-- let's see if we can go a bit deeper now-

Yes-- You have to have the inside air fan working,-- in order to blow the COLD air at the coil-- into the room.
So-- Can you trace the wire back from the motor to a terminal block, or remove the terminal block cover, and measure some voltages?
Is the wire into the motor, reading line voltage (120Volts-- or 240 volts-- what is the plus that the unit is plugged int, supplying?)

No- Voltage-- No Fan!-
If you have voltage-- but no fan turning:
Is the shaft frozen?-- can you spin the blade wit your hand?

How old is the unit?-- and has the fan motor worked recently?

Your evaporator fan motor has quit. You need to find out if it is a relay or the fan motor. These systems come in various different setups. Updraft (vertical) or lay down (horizontal) you have to gain access to the motor and get it out. Turn off all power to the unit, look for any breakers at the panel. open the panel usually the same panel to access the filters. The motor and squirrel cage fan, will come out as one. look closely for rails at the top to slide the motor and cage out. Your wiring should unplug from the top close to the capacitor. you then can unbolt the motor - take pictures so you can reassemble it. Take the motor to a local HVAC store for a match. Be sure you get a new capacitor to go with the new motor.

Every air conditioner is equipped with at least two motors, the compressor and the fan motor. It is possible for the fan motor to be defective and the compressor to be running. If this is the case the unit will appear to be running and may even sound "normal" but no air is blowing out the front or back of the unit. If, after removing the cover of the unit you discover the fan blade is very stiff and difficult to rotate, the fan motor should be replaced. If the fan blade turns freely the circuit powering the fan motor will require electrical troubleshooting. It may be necessary to have a qualified technician locate the cause of the problem, which may be either a problem with the capacitor, the selector switch or the motor itself.

Isthis a window unit? It sounds like it. There could be a problem with your fan switch or the fan motor itself? Multi-speed motors can lose one speed at a time. It really sounds like the fan motor is bad. If the compressor starts in the cool mode, and the fan doesn't, the fan motor could be locked up. See, if you can spin the motor by hand? If you can, then something is bad within the motor. Now, if the motor has a capacitor, check for a loose or burned wire. Good luck.
