It depends on how long until you plan to use it again.

How long you can leave gasoline in your fuel tank without risking problems varies with the blend of gasoline, the room temperature and even how much of the tank is filled. Air and warm temperatures cause faster fuel deterioration, which lead to hard starting. You should be okay for a about 3 weeks in most cases (maybe more if you use stabilizer), but if you will not use the generator for longer than that, you should drain the carburetor, sediment cup, and fuel tank to avoid fuel deterioration problems.

Your owner's manual should include a table with the storage times and recommended draining/service. If you don't have your manual, you can find most of them online, all you will need is the brand and model of your generator.

SOURCE: Won't continue running

This unit has a fuel solenoid on the carberator, which opens to allow fuel to the carberator. Check to see if this solenoid opens while cranking.

SOURCE: Honda EU3000is Generator is running poorly.

Can anyone help me with the eco-trottle switch when I switch it on it seems to run the same idle whether I have it off or on, what could be causing it not to work, is it a bad switch or I am running 89 octane could that be the problem.

Thanks

SOURCE: I have a new Guardian 40G generator that won't

Try to measure the voltage at the connector when trying to start.
If it is 12 V and the engine does not start - disconnect it and try again.

Have in mind that you must have protections (Shut down):

  1. Low oil level;
  2. Low oil pressure;
  3. High temperature.
and this valve may be responsible for them.

SOURCE: have onan microlite 4000 generator

Hello. 'll assume you checked the obvious things first; fuses, circuit breakers, cords, etc.
Use an ohm meter to confirm the windings are actually connected to the outlets. With the engine shut off (!) measure the resistance between the live and neutral lines. It should appear as a short circuit.

Here is something from my generator web page which you may want to try...
If the engine is working fine, but there is no output voltage try this trick. It may work on standard alternator type generators, but not on those which use an inverter. It worked for me in the past, but try at your own risk. First check to ensure that all circuit breakers and fuses are ok. Shut off the engine and remove any cords from the generator. Plug in a cord with bare wires on the other end to one of the 120VAC outlets. Connect one end of the cord to a car battery. Very quickly touch the other wire to the other battery terminal. Do not leave it there longer than to create a few sparks or you may destroy the windings. If the residual magnetism in the alternator had weakened, this may be enough to get it started again. J.

My G3500R Runs for about 15 mins than just stops. It was serviced about 1month ago. I burn good gas use a stabilizer

If this is a motor on a generator, they are usually only run during emergencies. That being the case the gas sits in them. The tank is not a big problem, it's the carb that gets gummed and plugged up. Using the gas that is sold today, most contain ethanol which contains some water. It sounds like the motor is running on what's in the carb and then stalls out for lack of fuel. Changing or removing the fuel filter if there is one may help. On the generator I have, I put a new inline fuel filter in. The generator would start and do the same. I took the fuel filter out and the motor starts and runs. I did have to take the carb apart and clean out with carb cleaner, even ALL the little tine holes in the carb with compressed air and a straight pin. Even though the shop cleaned the carb, they might have removed the fuel bowl on the bottom of the carb which has a needle valve that lets the fuel enter the bowl and gives the motor the initial amount to start and run. They might not have removed the carb and sprayed out the holes in the carb. I would remove the fuel filter and run it that way. If the motor runs then stall, I would remove and clean the carb.

Onan generator

When you say no fuel, are you indication the fuel pump has no fuel from the vehicle? if so the pickup tube in the tank should be looked at. If you have fuel at the pump inlet, and the pump makes a load clatter whilst priming check by installing a cheap clear gas fuel filter between the pump out and the carb, run the gen to see if the carb is been starved of fuel, if so replace the fuel pump. Anothe rpoint make sure it is an OEM pump as they are low pressure and an automotive fuel pump is too much pressure and can lock the carb and cause dangerous leaks

My WEN 550 generator has spark, but won't run. I have used some started fluid and it will run a couple of seconds only. I took the carb. apart and cleaned the needle valve, this did not do any good. Still...

I suspect that your carburetor is gummed up by the alcohol laced fuel that you are forced to use. If you leave that fuel in your machine for 3 months or longer. the alcohol absorbs water that will form a jelly like gunk that will clog all of the ports as well as your fuel filter. What happens is the alcohol evaporates and leaves behind the water that mixes with the other additives in gasoline. You are going to have to clean your carb, and fuel filter. Drain all of the old gasoline out. Put fresh in and mix a little SeaFoam or other gasoline additive. The SeaFoam will help dissolve the gunk, and maybe you can get it started to run to see if it will clean itself out. You may still have to dismantle the carb and clean. At the end of the use, drain all of the gasoline out of the tank and leave it dry for storage.

5500 watt generator won't start. Runs as long as starting fluid is applied. Checked gas flow, wire connections, on switch,took carb apart and checked float valve

With starting fluid, it runs, so this means spark and compression and valves closing properly. You mention gas flow, so gasolene is getting to the carb. This would then leave the problem being in the carb if indeed fuel is present at the carb. If you take apart the carb right now, is there fuel in the bowel? Or, remove the bottom screw on the carb, does gas flow out? Does it flow continuously or does it quit? This will indicate if the float valve is indeed opening. The only thing if you have fuel in the bowel and no start, even with the choke closed, is that the main jet must be plugged. Had the unit been sitting for quite a while with gasolene in it? Gas can "varnish" after a few months and this can cause plugging of the jets and other passages. How old is the gas in the unit? Old gas won't burn in the engine and this can also be a problem. Drain the tank, and carb, put some new gas in the unit and try it. You might have to take the carb apart again and use some carb cleaner to blow the **** out of all the carb passages. This should get it going again. Now, most important, when you get it running again, you need to adjust the engine speed so that you do not burn out any electrical equipment. If you have access to a frequency meter, plug it into the 120 volt outlet on the generator and adjust the speed so that the frequency with no load is 62 - 63 hz. This will allow the generator to drop to 60 hz under load. The adjustment is a 5/16 nut, right side of the upper engine, facing you.

Generator shuts of few seconds after start like there is no fuel

Has it been stored for a while with fuel in it? It's possible that the carb is dirty. If you store an engine for a long period of time and leave fuel in it, be sure to put a fuel stablizier in it. It's preferable to leave no fuel in it. Fuel has ethanol, and ethanol attracts water which causes corrosion. Ethanol can also causes certain gaskets and hoses in a fuel system to deteriorate and the residue can block up your carb. If your generator is only running for a few second, it's probably running off the prime and then starving for fuel. Just a guess, but it's the best possibility I can think of. You can try spraying carb cleaner in the intake and see if it helps and to see if you are on the right track. Good luck!

My 6250 generator has been dormant for a few years. Worked well previously. Can't start it now. It will fire with stater fluid, but stall. Fuel line checked and ok. I think Carb. might have buildup that...

yes gas will deteriate and leave varnish deposits clogging carberator and layer in tank has yellowish color flush lines with brake cleaner and spray carb with spray carb cleaner and spray inside fuel inlet on carb let sit about 15 minutes redo and sit about 4 times clean fuel tank with brake cleaner (with tank off) until clean, refill with fresh gas and add about table spoon carb cleaner per quart of gas and let in run for awhile. when storing for any period of time add fuel stabilizer to avoid this issue in future

Powermate 5000 leaks gas from the air filter..not sure how it's getting into the air filter?

My Coleman Generator 5000w with a Tecumseh 10hp story. Mine engine finally did die before I pulled the carburator off.
On mine the float was defective. It was full of fuel! I repaired the hole in it. I removed the air filter and saw fuel pouring out the side so much that I had a jar to catch it. I removed the carburator and took the nut off the bowl to examine the float. Then I removed the pin holding the hinged end of the float. Carefully pulled it out with the needle valve attached. When I removed the needle valve (just slides on mine) it was free to test. I tested by shaking it near my ear and I could hear the fuel inside the float. Mine was brass or copper. I wiped mine off with a napkin and finally found the hole. I drained the fuel by polking a needle sized hole and removed the fuel. I then soldered the hole shut with using just electronic 60/40 resin solder and a small soldering iron. Mine works like a champ now.
