Seagate st3500320as firmware sd15 not recognize by bios

You need to access the drive controller and reset it using an RS232 to CMOS convertor and hyperterminal. The problem is caused by the firmware on the controller software going into an infinite loop.
If bios is not seeing it then none of the software tools available will allow access.
Once the hard drive is reset, the disk is fully useable again. A firmware upgrade is possible at this point, but usually we just image the disk and load it onto a more reliable replacement as most customers do not want to experience that sort of fright again.
I have fixed a few of these and have the equipment to do it, but it is not really a task for the amateur.

Hi y'all! I had my 500Gb drive fail just before Easter. After a lot of research on the internet and inquiries to companies for a quote on data-recovery, I decided to give it a shot myself. Fortunately I have more than one 7200.11 SD15 hard-drive and one was still working. Here's how I did: I emptied the functioning drive. I switched the controllers between the drives and connected the good drive with the bad controller to my motherboard. The BIOS found it. There was some stuttering noise going on from the drive, but I had nothing to loose. I had made a CD with the firmware update to SD1A from Seagate. Once I knew that BIOS found the drive, I disconnected all other drives and booted from the CD. The firmware was updated. The drive was still not found by Windows (7 ultimate 64), but I was interested in the data from the other one, so I switched back the controllers between the discs and booted again. The BIOS found my "crashed" drive with the newly updated controller. Started Windows again and... There it was with all the data intact!
At the time of writing this, I still haven't checked if the other drive, that I used to do the fix, is still working, but... it had been emptied before the whole experiment.
So, there is light at the end of the tunnel if your drive disappears due to the firmware error. If it still hasn't failed, I recommend you to update the firmware to SD1A as soon as possible.

As all the 7200.11's fw has the bug,so if you cannot update it,then maybe you can go to ask the ST official about this problem.

Hi guys!

I hit the same problem yesterday. The drive is ST3500320AS (Seagate 500 GB SATA with SD15 firmware).

I have some relevant data on that disk and it would mean a LOT if I could get it running, at least to copy that data.

I don't have the equipment to kickstart that drive controller.

What should I do?

Call Seagate technical support. The guys are really helpful and will send you a ups shipping code so you can mail in the dead hdd and they'll flash the bios for you and send it back. Hopefully this will nto affect your data.

Dave836, I am an amateur, so your explanation sounds good, but what am I supposed to do with it? You say you can fix it, but how can I get in touch with you so that you can fix mine (for compensation, of course).

I have my 500 GB Barracuda lying in the trash. Once the problem starts there's no way you can make it detectable....Then how are you going to update your firmware. The only solution.. Buy a new HD preferrably NOT from Seagate. There are millions of customer pissed with SD15 issue. But the GREAT Seagate has not taken any step to help you with Data recovery. Recovery firms will charge you Rs 40000 to 50000 which is 9-10 times your Seagate Barracuda.....
