When i plugged in my sva lcd monitor it was all black but the green light was on,so i reached around the back and tightened up my cords and it came on :)

To select the picture size using the remote control
Press "Picture Size Button" on the remote control

While the Picture Size screen is open, you can do one of

Repeatedly press "Picture Size Button"

not sure about the Spyder software but my calibration tool makes those adjustments automatically for apple displays with no controls. It would ask me during the setup "if the controls are available?" a no answer would just allow me to go to the next step.

Do you have back light when turning on the TV? if you do then just replace the main board should resolve the problem. if you do not have back light, you will need to replace the inverter board(s) depending on your model. The inverter board(s) is located on the left side of the TV facing back of TV. you may have two inverter boards depending on your model. the other is located on the right side of the TV. Both mount vertically.

What is the purpose for resetting the tv?

The black box is caused by the Closed Caption option of the tv. Go into the menu and turn it off.
