Dell Inspiron 530 randomly shuts down and restarts

Dell Inspiron 530

Randomly, shortly after startup, my computer shuts down and then restarts. After that initial mystery, everything seems to work just fine. The computer is less than two years old. I have 445GB of free space.

Will appreciate any help. Thanks

Thanks, gurutim, but there is no heat problem or virus. I already use Norton. BUT, I think that just reading your response may have helped - the computer hasn't shutdown & restarted on its own since I read this a couple of days back.

    Thanks again

May want to check the power settings. If you have Win Vista or 7 you want to go to personalize. Or in any version of windows xp-8 go to search and type in Power Options. From here you can set to length of time before unit goes to sleep or shuts down. A lot of time this is the problem. Microsoft has a preset time on installing a system. Depending on Windows version it could be preset for 1 - 10 min. For instants Just reinstalled my XP unit shut down was preset to 10 min sleep was set at 1 min. Power options can also be accessed through the screensaver set up window or also control panel.

Sounds like it could be a virus. Or, a heat buildup problem - are all fans inside machine working? Is the fan inside the power supply operating? Was there any work done inside the computer recently?
If the hdw is all ok, go out and buy yourself a copy of Norton Internet Security 2009 - 1 user lic - $49.99 @ Staples. Do *not* buy any earlier vers. of this software! Install, update it, run computer computer scan - probably will find/remove some/many viruses.

If this helps, please take the time to rate my response to you.
Thanks and good luck.

Dell XPS 630i on start up goes into Configuration Updates...Fails and states "Updates were not configured correctly. reverting changes". Will shut down randomly.

If your computer is shutting down randomly and not because it is doing a post update restart, it may be worth giving the interior a clean as it could be overheating from dust build up in the fans and heatsink. Before you do that make sure you use a soft paint brush and that the power is disconnected from the computer. Be gentle with the brush as the capacitors are delicate and important.

Dell dimension 370 randomly shuts down orange light flashes on pwr button

I suspect your graphics card or processor is overheating and shutting itself off to prevent damage.

Cool the unit down with additional fans, introducing cool air and exhausting warm air is key to a reliable, stable computer system.

The reason for this sudden problem is most likely because a higher resolution on the new monitor is supported, therefore making the computer work much harder than before.

Take care!

Yes, most likely. When a computer reboots randomly, it is usually some hardware malfunction, but when it shuts down completely, it is almost always heat-related. The CPU fan is usually the first place to look!

HI,
The 6 beeps on the computer suggest a video card BIOS failure.
If you have an add-on video card on the computer . Trying removing the same and then restart your computer. If the the video card is on board on the motherboard. Then the motherboard would need to either service , that would be expensive,or get the motherboard replaced.

most likely related to the blue screen issues. a possible reinstall of the OS may be needed. To check if it is blue screen related, restart the computer, press F8 when system restarts, then select the option to disable auto-restart option on the advanced options menu and press Enter. Next time you use the system, see if it will still auto-restart or if you'll get a blue screen. If there is an error, a system rstore or OS repair or reinstall may also be needed.

2- Repairing and cleaning Windows registry.
These two tips are found to be very helpful to fix the laptop shutdown problem. Almost all the computer users surf internet which could result in viruses attacking your system. Some of these infections are really pesky and cause the machines to shutdown randomly.
The registry errors, however, are the internal errors and can become a cause of system crashes and freezes. The registry keys shall be in good health to keep a system perfect.
When I noticed my laptop keeps shutting down everytime, I tested the Intel Software Partner, RegInOut to fix the random shutdown problem with my laptop.
