Need to Replace Defrost Timer

Defrost Timer not functioning: I know my defrost timer isn't working properly. I have been manually defrosting the freezer regularly. If I knew exactly where the defrost timer was located, I could replace it. So does anyone know where that pesky little defrost timer is located in the refrigerator?

  • dunniteowl Apr 04, 2009

Well, sorry I took so long to respond. I didn't find the defrost timer, nor did I locate a spot to adjust it from the back. What I did discover, however, was that the heater element at the base of the refrigeration coils was completely open (Ohm'd out to Infinite and from my experience, heater elements shouldn't be more than something around 40 Ohms or less.)

So thanks for the reply, however, I know I require a new heater element for my refrigerator.

My Tantung refrigerator frosts up every two weeks. I'm sure it's the timer from Google research but am unsure where the timer is, to see if it's working, and if that's really the problem?

If your Tantung refrigerator is frosting up every two weeks, it could indeed be a problem with the defrost timer. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot the issue: Locate the defrost timer: The defrost timer is usually located in the refrigerator's control panel or behind the kick plate at the bottom of the unit. Check your refrigerator's manual for specific instructions on how to access the defrost timer. Check the timer: Use a multimeter to check the continuity of the defrost timer. Set the multimeter to the lowest resistance scale and touch the probes to the terminals of the timer. If the meter reads zero ohms, the timer is working properly. If the meter reads infinite resistance, the timer is faulty and needs to be replaced. Check the defrost heater and thermostat: If the timer is working properly, the issue may be with the defrost heater or thermostat. Use a multimeter to check the continuity of these components, following the same process as for the defrost timer. Replace faulty components: If any of the components are found to be faulty, they will need to be replaced. Be sure to disconnect the refrigerator from the power source before replacing any parts. If you are not comfortable with troubleshooting and repairing appliances, it is recommended to consult a qualified technician for assistance.

Bypass defrost timer

Just turn the defrost tmer clockwise to cause defrost or run conditions. If you bypass the defrost timer you will have problems like shorting of wiring or loss of the timed defrost. Why not replace the defrost timer if you know it is defective? What is the model number of your refrigerator? Thanks Sea Breeze

I want you open up the control panel or look for an opening where you can place a flathead screwdriver through the panel to turn the defrost timer slowly until the compressor and fans turn off. Thish should manually force defrost providing the defrost heater and defrost thermostat are still good. The defrost timer is location number 4 in this photo HERE Leave timer in that position for up to 45 minutes. If doing this causes defrost to work simply replace the=> 482493 Defrost Timer If this does bot work then you will need to move and check out or replace the=> 2263749 Defrost Heater Assembly Let me know what you find Sea Breeze

I have a kitchenaid side by side refrigerator model #KSSC42MFS05 and the freezer isn't getting cold enough to freeze ice cream and the ice maker isn't working.

Look at the rear wall of the freezer for a layer of frost building on the outside of that panel. If yes the refrigerator may be missing defrost. That would explain why the feezer temperatures are warming. If the ice maker is above 5 degrees F it will not be able to make ice. Things to check are the=> 2162044 Defrost Timer

I would like you to locate the defrost timer and turn the center with a flathead screwdriver slowly clockwise until compressor and fans turn off. Leave like this up to 30 minutes. This will cause the defrost to begin. If timer does not restart the compressor an fans after 30 minutes simply turn the timer again slowly clockwise until the compressor and fans restart. If the timer need to be turned like this then this would indicate that the defrost timer is defective and will need replaced. Let me know if you have questions Thanks Sea Breeze

Freezer coil inside freezer box loads up rhyme ice preventing air flow. If I defrost the freezer it will work fine for a few weeks. I suspect there is a defrost timer, or humidity control that isn't...

There are three parts to all defrost systems.
1. Defrost Heater2. Defrost Timer3. Defrost Thermostat
Without a model number I could not look up a diagram or part numbers. I very seldom see a bad heating element. Most common is a bad defrost timer, second most common is the defrost thermostat.

I don't have an owners manual and want to know where I should set the freezer to avoid unnecessary ice build-up. Also is there a setting for defrost?

Click Here for your user manual=> MQU1556AEW.pdf The settings for defrost should come automatically every 12 hours. You may test the defrost timer that appears to be behind the kick plate at base and front bottom of refrigerator by removing the kick plate first and using a flathead screwdriver turn slowly clockwise until compressor stops. After a few minutes you should be able to hear a crackling noise or sizzle by opening the door and listening. Leave the timer like that for up to 35 minutes and if the freezer does not start on its own the the timer is not working properly and will need replaced. Click Here=> MQU1556AEW Unit parts number 15 in photo is defrost timer. The defrost timer is part number=> 4357124 Defrost Timer Check for air leaks around door seal as this will cause the same symptoms. If by chance the defrost timer works and the defrost does not then let me know here or here=> Appliance 911 The only other parts are the defrost heater number 16 in photo MQU1556AEW Unit Parts and part number for defrost heater is Click Here=> 8201749 If you change the defrost heater it is always good to replace the defrost thermostat number 18 in MQU1556AEW Unit Parts The defrost thermostat is part number=> 1-81801-001 The most likely problem is the defrost timer but I needed to cover every possibility. Compressor run for about 30 seconds and shuts off for three minutes and comes back on and does the same .

hi If the compressor doesn't run, it is likely that the defrost timer is malfunctioning. This part is located near the compressor. To test the defrost timer:
Step 1:
Unplug the refrigerator.

Step 2:
Disconnect the wires from the timer and timer motor. Remove the timer from its brackets by backing out two retaining screws.

Step 3:
Test the defrost timer with a VOM set to the RX1 scale. Clip one probe of the VOM to each defrost timer -- not motor -- wire, and turn the timer control screw shaft until it clicks. If the defrost timer is functioning, the meter will read zero. If the needle jumps, the defrost timer is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type.

Step 4:
Connect the new defrost timer the same way the old one was connected.

To check the defrost timer motor, clip one probe of the VOM to each motor wire, setting the scale to RX100. If the meter reads between about 500 and 3,000 ohms, the motor is functioning properly. If the meter reads higher than 3,000 ohms, the timer motor is faulty. Replace it with a new one of the same type. Connect the new motor the same way the old one was connected.
