18 hp kohler magnum with no compression

The engine ran great until it came time to shut down it then back fired and ran on after I shut it off.The next time I started it, it ran slower and slower then died.It has no compression in either cylinder and occasionally backfires but won't start. The fuel pump is new and the carbs been cleaned there's enough fuel.

Have you checked for a bad head gasket?

Check the intake valve springs or the intake valve shafts to be sure they aren't stuck open. Another cause could be excessive carbon build up on the intake valve causing them to not seal.

If you've gone this far, you could try a compression leak down test. If you still have the push rods out, you can use or get an adapter that will allow you to pressurize the cylinder(s) with air by removing the spark plug. Apply 70-80 psi air directly to the cylinder (the cylinder may go to BDC (bottom dead center) but if you don't have any push rods, the valves can't open.

Listen carefully - if you hear air leaking out of the carb, it's a bad intake valve. If you hear air from the exhaust, it's an exhaust valve. If you hear air from the crankcase breather, it's piston rings.

SOURCE: kohler motor starts then carb loads up with gas

If the engine is running rough then this could mean that you have weak spark or valve adjustment. When an engine runs rough it will not burn all the fuel, which will create excess fuel in the air cleaner housing. Also, make sure the the float is closing in the carberator.

SOURCE: kohler k582 runs poorly at operating speed.

ALWAYS CHECK THE POINTS!!! 20 years operating this engine and you'd think I would know better. The points were severely pitted. Spec said .020 but actual is .013. The cold weather had me suspecting a carb problem. DOH!

SOURCE: Kohler 17.5 command. will not start

The woodruff / flywheel key is likely partially sheared. Pull off the air housing, remove the starting clutch, to get to where you can see the flywheel key. I bet you will find that the key has distorted. Easily replaced once flywheel is pulled. Make sure to use the correct key when replacing it.

How to identify a Ford tractor without motor. And what's the difference between a Kohler and Kohler Magnum engine?

Question edited for a lot more clarity and tidy up the written English.

It sounds like you have enough to get one running and then when parts become available to make 3 tractors and sell two working to recoup the costs.. Both the Gravely and the Fords are good workhorses. I am thinking if he was breaking front tie rods either the alignment was out or he was driving like a rally driver and too fast in the corners. Doesn't help if you are 300 pounds either..

Here are the differences between the two engines. Bigger bore and Stroke on the Magnum

The 16 and 18 are almost identical, the 20 has a longer stroke, larger diameter crankpin and piston pin.

I have a walker 18hp with kohler engine. Started it up and it ran for about a minute and cut off. turn the ignition and it won't make a sound. cleaned battery terminals and changed spark plug.

Running for about a minute sounds like fuel starvation. There could be an obstruction in the fuel tank, which allows the engine only the fuel that is in the fuel line, until it quits.
Why it won't start again is probably another matter.

18 HP Kohler Magnum engine. What is the compression?

Are you asking for leak down pressure, bmep, or compression ratio? Depending on the hours on any L-head engine the carbon deposits will create higher pressure. Running the engine while spraying water as from a Windex bottle will clean them out.

I have a kohler 18 hp twin engine on a cub cadet. Backfire when shut off. Started back up sputtered. Fuel coming out by air filter. Took air filter off and ran great. What would be the problem?

Check to make sure idol isnt set too high, make sure the air filter is infact clean to prevent it from chocking itself, make sure choke is off :-) and also make sure you idol all the way down when you kill it. Make sure your spark plug is good to prevent flood, and detonation, peaceout.

How do you check the cam/shaft timing on a 16 HP Kohler engine?

Go to http://www.kohlerengines.com/manuals/landing.htm and enter your engine model number as instructed on that page. Kohler generally has service manuals avaialable on their site.. As an example, there are 2 service manuals for 16HP vertical-shaft engines available there (Courage and Magnum series) and 3 service manuals for 16HP horizontal-shaft engines (K, Magnum and Triad series).

I have 16 hp Kohler engine with a compression release not working, help.

i have a Kohler 16 Magnum opposed cylinder engine and it wont crank over with the spark plugs in it,battery and starter are both good, its an aluminum engine and i have seen several of the Kohler engines break the automatic compression release on the cam gear and they seem to lock up while trying to start, pull the plugs and the crank fine,Kokler is the most expensive engine i have seen and their parts are outrageously priced, old Kokler was a good engine, newer ones in my opinion are junk,i work at a small engine shop,i have seen new Kohler engines with a broken ACRs,i work at a second job,we got a new supervisor that worked for Kohler before her came to our plant,he said he worked customer service at Kohler and he heard complaints constantly from people using their engines and the returns were out the roof on their engines, what im saying is i wont ever but another Kohler unless itsm an old one,Thanks Tommy

I have a craftsman gt 6000 with kohler 18 hp magnum today it started fine and ran goodd for over an hour i put gas in it and ti would not stay runing it stated surging and popping and cuts off

Your carb is full of trash. you also probaly need to clean out the bottom of your fuel tank, blow out your lines and replace the fuel filter. I have 2 mowers with kohler engines and clean out the fuel tanks fuel lines and carbs 1 time a year. There is also a fuel shut solenoid on the carb this is normally problem if the engine does not run. but I am certain your problem is a simple fix, all you have to do is clean everything out in the fuel system.
