You're not doing anything wrong. Your TV is somehow turning the cc on "all by itself". Some bit is getting flipped inside the TV, turning the cc on.

either that or there is some sort of rf or ir interference near the TV that is mimicking the CC button on the remote.

Have you pressed the cc button on the remote, verified the cc is "off" on the TV and then removed the batteries from the remote for a while to make sure there isn't something hinky with the remote???

How do I turn off closed captioning

If you have the original remote control, there's normally a single button that controls captioning. You press it to cycle through the captioning choices until you reach "off". If you don't have the original control, you may have caption control available through the on-screen menus. Not all makes and models provide it, though.

If you're using this TV with a cable converter, satellite receiver or another set-top box, the captions you're seeing may be coming from that device and not from the TV's caption decoder. Make sure you check that captioning is shut off on those devices as well.

Philips 50" flat screen - Closed captioning won't turn off

on my magnavox it was the verizon fios remote that enabled it by accident (it is tuned to control the tv) however it was a cc button represented by the * on the remote that i had to select to change the cc. this didn't make it go away so i just pressed buttons i used the "Aspect" button represented by the # it changed the ratio and the message went away. I usually only use the fios remote to turn the tv on and off but this must be some whacky override that comes from the fios remote.

Cant turn off caption on tv

There are several universal remotes on the market that can be programmed to work this function on your TV, one that comes to mind are the Logitech Harmony remotes. The great thing about this remote is it will work for any device in your house. The down side is they are 100$+.

Now if you simply want to turn off CC with the remote, and then take it back to the store, then that could work too! ;)

Another option would be to leave the TV completely unhooked for a while, hoping to "clear" and memory on the TV, resetting closed captioning back to the factory default. A lot of older TV's also would have a reset button, usually behind and door that could accomplish this. There is no guarantee that this would even work though. I think the safest bet would be a new universal like the Harmony.

Cheers!

Turning off the closed captioning without the remote.

I had the same problem. I got a Philips Magnavox Universal Remote that has a closed captioning button [CC]. Here's a link to the same type:

Close caption turns on and off by itself problem

Check the cable box to make sure the captions aren't truned on in the cable box.

If not -if it really is the Magnavox caption service- then -

This is assuming you have the original remote:
1 Press MENU to show the on-screen
menu.
2 Press VOL+ or VOL- until SET is highlighted.
3 Press CH+ or CH- repeatedly to
highlight CLOSED CAPTION.
4 Press VOL+ or VOL-
to display the
CLOSED CAPTION menu.
5 Press CH+ or CH- to select the
closed caption you want (OFF, CC-1,
CC-2, or CC-MUTE).
CC-MUTE sets
the TV to show closed captions when
you press MUTE. The TV volume will be
disabled until you press MUTE again to
restore the sound.
6 Press VOL+ or VOL-
to confirm your
selection.
7 Press TV/AV/EXIT to remove the
menu.

Closed Caption

If you dont have the original remote, its going to be kinda hard, as universals wont work on this funtion on this set. The original remote has a button marked "CC" toward the bottom of the remote. Maybe you can borrowe on from a friend or a local sales store just so you can turn off the closed caption.. You can purchae a replace remote that is exactly the same as the original at http://www.remotes.com and enter your model number.
