Antifreeze overflow tank empty

My boyfriend has been telling me for a while when my car is running and when you walk by it you can smell antifreeze. i got my oil changed a while ago and it was fine but then i got my oil changed this weekend 4000 later and the antifreeze overflow tank was empty and it is not leaking out anywhere so it would have to be burning it up somewhere or going somewhere in my engine. what do you think it might be?

Hi Kristie,if your boyfriend can walk by your car and spell antifreeze, then you have a leak.Usually,it will be your water pump, you can put newspaper or whatever you can use under your car after you have driving it and wait awhile then check paper and see where it is wet to determine what is leaking, could also be a loose radiator hose which the clamp may just need tightening up,but first add some antifreeze to your over flow container, remove radiator cap after it cools down to see how much is in radiator, add if needed.Look around radiator area,it may be leaking. You can also jack it up to look.

SOURCE: High oil Consumption, BMW M5

Look for Castrol TWS 10W60 Motor Oil. This car should not burn so much oil, you need to use a different kind. It is recommended by BMW as well. I also heard the VANOS isnt an issue anymore, can be fixed with a different MAFF. Good luck!

SOURCE: 1999 Gr Jeep Cherokee-antifreeze issue

how often does the warning comes on doing the week or in two weeks? if it was a one time thing or this takes place every 3-5 months i wouldn't worry about it. i will make sure that the radiator cap is on tight. you said that all hose seem to be in good condition i would check the radiator where the cooling fan covers the fins and the water pump because it has a warn hole at the base that will seep out antifreeze when the inside seals are going bad these will cause the smell also.

Car loses water from overflow cap. Replaced water pump, thermostat and overflow bottle and cap.

Stop me if this has NOTHING to do with your problem (or if it's already been solved)...I don't know a lot about cars so...My Ford Taurus kept overflowing antifreeze from the reservoir cap. Car started to over heat and kept spilling"/dumping" antifreeze every time I turned the car off. The antifreeze reservoir had been replaced less than a year prior, and water pump, radiator, etc looked at. I got a free estimate that stated my water pump was NOT the issue, but I did need a new radiator and my reservoir tank needed to be replaced (again)....$800 parts and labor.... However...I noticed the overflow holes on the tank, and also that the orange liquid (antifreeze), was also spilled around the cap lid. I also noticed the CAP on the antifreeze reservoir would loosen when tightened completely- hence, not sealing correctly. So I went to the dealer, bought a new reservoir cap for $15, replaced it, and never had an issue after! I also found out that the CAP was a DEALER PART ONLY, and when the tank itself was replaced, the CAP was the OLD one! Problem fixed! Maybe it's similar? Or something "more serious".

How much antifreezes do u put back n after draining out of a 2005 Pontic grand prix

I would generally drain the whole system, including the radiator, then refill with a 50% solution of water and antifreeze. I believe this is the standard procedure for most autos. Fill the engine and the overflow tank. Run the engine till at temperature, then shut down for an hour. By then, the overflow tank will be low if not empty, and need to be refilled. As you use the vehicle, you may need to refill the tank from time to time. as for the amount of AF, hard to tell, just mix a 50-50 solution and add it to the radiator/tank till full, then proceed as noted above. I suggest mixing the solution first, then begin to add.

Coolant resevoir of 2002 Suburban is empty. What do I fill it with. Does this indicate a leak in the system?

The resevoir should be filled with a 50/50 solution of water and anti freeze.
The fact that it is empty indicates a leak in the system.
Refill it and watch the overflow tank and other coolent items like hoses and such and note any leakage.
If you smell the sweet smell of antifreeze when driving the truck , you may have a radiator issue.

While in my way home, I noticed sudden rise of engine temperature. The radiator water is empty.I noticed that the engine radiator has cracks arount the clipping metal. I brought my car to the nearest...

It is normal for some antifreeze move into the overflow tank when the engine cools down after it is shutoff and draw the antifreeze back into the engine when it is warmup, but if it is push antifreeze into the overflow tank and overflowing the tank then most likely the cylinder head is cracked or the headgasket is blown. You can take it to a automotive shop and have them check for hydrocarbons (exhaust gases) in the radiator.

Good luck

1) Coolant/owners manual comes on when car is started. new rad and water pump replaced a few moths ago. also I get a slight antifreeze smell. 2)drivers side seat only raises on the left side

If you can smell it then it's leaking or overflowing from reservoir. The dash light on most cars isn't for the radiator itself but the coolant reservoir telling you it's empty. Which could be the case if coolant is leaking and each time it cools it sucks more out of the reservoir until empty and then you end up with air pockets in the radiator which will overheat the car.

Why is my buick century coolant light always on

You may want to check your manual. There is usually a light to tell you the coolant level in your reserve or overflow tank is low, and there is another light to tell you the system is overheating due to not enough coolant in the entire system. Nonetheless if either light remains on and you have refilled the overflow/reserve tank it is time to look for a leak. Leaks can be at hoses, in gaskets, and other locations. A puddle on the floor where the car is usually parked can help you locate a cracked hose or loose clamp, an antifreeze smell in your exhaust can help you locate a much worse problem.Often you may detect an antifreeze smell only after the car is warmed up which can be a leak which is running onto an exhaust pipe.

Antifreeze overflow from tank

I would check for visible cracks and leaking at the overflow tank when the engine is cold, then when the engine is running and at operating temperature and not running and at operating temperature as well as during cool down. Also check the coolant overflow hose for leaks or obstructions inside the hose or if the hose is kinked. Check to make sure that the overflow tank cap is damage free and securely fastened.

Yes the water pump may be bad or in one of the overheating epidodes the compression is going to the radiator, have a auto technician to run a back pressure test on the radiator for any compression leak on the head gasket.

I smell coolant

if you can smell it it must be in the cab andf the only way the coolant can leak in there is throuhg the heater matrix which is located under the dashboard, a way to find out is to check the floor for any excess moisture. if this is the case then it will def be that.
