Compaq Presario 4400us

The computer originally would not power up. So I purchased the correct power supply and installed it. Now the symptoms are: Plug power cord in power supply and the power comes on immediately with out pushing power button. Only the CPU fan comes on and the power light is red (bad) not Green (good). You can hear the harddrive spin up but nothing else happens. No video. No POST beeps. Nothing. If you push the power button nothing happens. When you Push and hold the power button for more than 4 seconds the Harddrive LED lights solid and the CD drive lights green solid along with power light stays Red and CPU fan stays on. After this if you push the power button the Hardrive and CD LED's go out Power light stays Red and CPU fan stays on. Power can not be turned off except by unplugging Power cord. Anyone see this before. Fried motherboard or CPU?

    Thanks for the reply. I am pretty sure it is not the PS because I tried two of them and they both give the same symptom. And prior to this the computer would reset by itself every two weeks or so. I will see if I can scrounge around for another motherboard and try it.

    same problem here...the current power supply when plugged in only gives off a light hiss, So I replaced power supply with new one and now as soon as I plugg in the power cord cpu fan goes on and cd drive lights up but thats it. Front power button does nothing but flash yellow at the begining. Hard drive spins but there is no boot of any kind. I have to unplugg power cord to turn off. MotherBoard or CPU?? What can I try next?

    power brick and xbox both have green lights when i hit the power button it bings and then goes off and the power brick turns red light on

Either the new power supply you purchased is not functioning correctly. But, assuming it is now that you are getting some form of power to your PC, it is very likely the motherboard. Whatever fried your old power supply (or it could have just been the power supply itself) most likely fried your motherboard in the process. Probably not the CPU since the MB can't even post.

No you don't. If you think the power supply is bad, then unplug it, unscrew it, and take it to a discount place like Fry's to simply match it. Compaq does not make its own power supplies, so they use generic ones, like everyone else does. The only thing you have to choose is how many watts you need. The original may have been rated too small if it went bad, and you many want one with more power, like 500 watts.

Installing XP SP3 pro on my presario C700
Most likely you have a SATA drive which windows is not detecting. Restart the setup and press F6. You will need to use another system to download the SATA drivers and save to a disk. Then when prompted you can insert the disk. You can also upgrade to XP professional which will almost always recognize the SATA drives. Good Luck.

Sounds like the Power Supply is bad likes its not able to power on itself. Best thing to do, try a different known good power supply and attach it to the motherboard, if you get the same symptom with the machine not powering on then its a bad motherboard. If the machine does power on then you know your original power supply is bad.

Dell installed on compaq
Hi, you have to use the original CD installer for WinXP that came bundled with your Compaq Presario. Reinstalling with the use of that CD will overwrite all previous installtion (from Dell) and should correctly install the drivers as well. Should the CD be not available, you may want to try and call Microsoft Support and relay to them your problem. You may need copies of proof of purchase and other documents and/or the serial number for the WinXP normally printed on a sticker at the side, back (or underneath for a laptop) of the PC. Another way is to purchase a CD installer of WinXP SP2 and go thru the routine of installing it. Hiope this be of some help to you. Good luck.
