I have a RCI 2970 and it will squeel until you unplug and then plug the external speaker back in... I key it up and then it will last about 15seconds and then it wont squeel again until i key up again... what could be doing this... I have tried different speakers and different grounds but nothing will work.. It seems like when it warms up it doesnt do it as often
Strange! I used to run almost the same kinda setup but with a super scanner omnibeam, i modded mine myself. At 1 time i had a squeal problem it was in the mic if i remember correctlly i ran a external wire from the screw on the spring inside the mic where the cord comes out to the radio chassis and it stopped it give it a try. I used a simple speaker wire, also you might want to try grounding the radio to the power supply. Sounds like a ground problem! I have a awsome mod for that radio that would enable you to run a regular amp with it and also would enable you to talk local without engaging the amp in the radio using only 4 watts! Let me know how it works out for you with the squeal? if intrested in that mod contact via email at ([email protected]). put 2970 in the subject line. Take care.
your problem is due short circuit in horizontal section of tv
your problem & smell is due to horizontal section failure.
in that section
1 flyback transformer & horizontal output transistor might be faulty.
but remember to check power supply is normal other wise it may fail again.
for skilled technician it is not a major problem &easy to fix at fair cost.
good luck.

I dont know what mods have been done to it.. I bought it used.. I have a tug8 mic and no amp is in line.. I use a JOGUNN 4 element star beam.. I only does this when it is cold.. When it warms up it quits.. it started doing this about 2 weeks ago.. thanks for all your help..
Just last night I had the volume down when i went to bed.. I woke up with the radio loud and squeeling.. When i unplug the external speaker from the jack, and plug it back in the noise and loudness goes away.. It only does this when the radio is cold...I have ground rods all over the back yard and one coming into the house ..I dont think it is a ground problem, becauses I have been running this setup for almost three years now and this problem just started a couple of weeks ago.... thanks
I havent had time to check and see if that would help... I have been working on my daughters truck.. thanks for bering so helpful.. I will let you know if your suggestion works... thanks bull.
