The Tomtom devices need to locate GPS satellites in the sky in order to work. Unlike TV satellites, these do not have fixed positions but move relatively to the ground. The Tomtom can locate them by scanning the hemisphere, but this takes up to ten minutes after you switch on the device.

To speed up the process, the Tomtom receivers can use a helper file stored on the device. It holds precomputed positional data for the GPS satellites that makes finding them a matter of a few seconds.

However, the file holds precomputed data for some two weeks in advance only. After this period, the Tomtom device has to resort to the slow scanning procedure.

You will need to connect your Tomtom device to a PC with the "Tomtom HOME" software installed, available from the Tomtom company web site. Use the software by following the onscreen instructions to update the package "QuickGPSFix" at least once every two weeks and you will find your device much more swift in establishing GPS connection.

It is absolutely necessary to frequently update the quick GPS fix information for better functioning of the GPS. To update Quick GPS fix you need to connect the GPS to the computer. Once GPS is connected it will ask you whether you would like to install the TomTom home software. say yes to that suggestion and follow the tips on the screen. depending on the version of the unit there are a couple of things you can try.

1: look for a reset button underneath the device, if there is one press and hold it with a paperclip for 5 seconds
2: plug the unit into your PC and update the software via tomtom home if this doesn't work give tomtom a call and go through there troubleshooting tips

i work as a truck driver on a small fleet of 7 vehicles in the midlands UK

3 of us have Tom Toms, the others have medion, navman or garmin.

ALL the tom tom users have been experiencing GPS problems this week ( june 21 onwards ) whilst the rest of us have seen no change in GPS satelite availability.

In addition, a friend who uses a TOM TOM One XL in another part of the UK has also had same problems.

Its a TOM TOM problem generally it seems, and NOT your particular piece of kit.

If it only 2 days old and you have your receipt take it back

Hi There!

You Can charge your Tomtom when you drive, or you can charge it with a USB port on your computer.
I don't think they come with a mains charger anymore?

OK... I found an amature solution;

- Do a soft reset of the system, with the paperclip (see tomtom site)
- Put the device on the docking station and connect it to power as well as to your computer. While it's turned off
- Turn on the TOMTOM while connected to the computer
- Start the TOMTOM Home software
- And it made connection again
- Disconnect the device via the software
- Take the device out of the docking station
- Turn it off and on once

This worked for me, my next step would have been the support desk. Grtz Derk
