This happened with the first Didj we bought. Struggled to open the battery case with the stupid recommended dime. [Use a screwdriver instead - better able to push down the lever inside the case.] The 1st Didj never turned on. Totally dead. Exchanged it. The second Didj was easier to open compartment to install batteries and turned on immediately. Reommend you take it back.
I had the same problem. First off, if the battery packs are not on the right side it won't work, but the real trick is, not just sliding the "on" button to turn it on, but rather, slide and hold for a little while (much the same way you turn your cellphone on and off) This solved my problem.
Just a possibility here but make sure if you are going off the batteries that you re-installed the battery packs on the correct side. Unfortunately Leap Frog designers didn't dummy proof it by only allowing the correct battery pack to be allowed to be installed on the correct side. On one side of the DiDj system there is only two contacts exposed to mate with the battery pack but the other side has four contacts. If you have these battery packs reversed then you will have no power! Hope this helps someone!
Make sure you are using the power switch - the contrast switch looks a lot like the power turn on switch. The power switch is on the right side and the contrast switch is on the left.
My unit has four contacts on each side, but each battery pack only has two contacts...so I don't see how switching them will help. But we tried and that still didn't work.
Follow these steps To reset the Didj to factory settings and solve your problem:
1) Launch LeapFrog Connect
2) On your computer keyboard, press "Ctrl + Shift + R"
(on a Mac "Command + Shift + R").
This should bring up a window that says "Connect the device you would like to reset"
3) Connect the Didj and turn it on
4) Follow the on screen messaging to reset the Didj
5) Eject the Didj when the reset is complete
6) Recreate the profile on the Didj and then turn it off
7) Close and then open LeapFrog Connect
8) Connect the Didj and turn it on
9) You may be prompted the Didj needs an update. Accept this update
10) Get your parents to sign into the parent account and link a footprint to the current profile.

hi! we have a similar problem - at first we solved it by holding the on switch down for 3 seconds or more before letting it go and then it went on. Now it won't STAY on, it keeps shutting itself down.
We bought the first Didj for our son for Christmas and from the start it said "your Didj is shutting down" and would not ever shut down, so we returned it for a new Didj. The new Didj is now going "mute" on it's own intermittantly.
New out the box, my daughter's didj never turned on all the way. It brings her to the 1st screen showing the warnings, then it says your didj is shutting down. She has never been able to play the game at all, even with new batteries.
We went to change the batteries and ever since then we can not get it to turn back on at all.
Same problem. Goes on and then says didj is shutting down
Didj is frozen - won't shut down.
So disappointed! Inserted batteries, then inserted new ones. No flicker of light or sound.
The connect app will not download on my laptop. I have hit clicked on the RUN button but then nothing else happens. PLease I'm trying to get new stuff on my sons leappad.
