Leapster 2 Doesn't Recognize Stylus

I bought the Leapster 2-Cars Edition brand new. I put new Energizer batteries in the system and turned it on. The game comes on however we can't get past the sign in screen. The leapster 2 doesn't recognize the stylus.

It was working for me since Christmas and all of a sudden, even with new batteries it won't! There must be a way to hard boot it, right?

  • staceylnstl Jan 13, 2009

We too have a new Leapster 2 and have this exact problem. Was working fine, replaced the batteries and the stylus won't work on its own. If you push the second "o" button on the bottom while using the stylus it works, but the stylus itself won't work without doing that.

  • chichigrtrk Jan 18, 2009

I too was having this problem and this solution worked for me as well. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Thanks to the person that figured this one out.

I put new batteries in my daughters leapster2 disney princess edition and it turns on for a brief second, then a low battery symbol shows up and it shuts down. Can anyone help me with this?

  • kkottkey Jan 19, 2009

We have had the Leapster 2 for one month. The machine will turn on but we cannot get past the pick a country icon. We have changed the battery and my husband tried the stylus on my daughters Leapster and it works fine. It seems to be something wrong with the screen not reading the stylus. Any suggestions?

  • hopeso2 Jan 29, 2009

My son received a Leapster 2 for Christmas. He has been playing a Cars game also and he can not choose his name with the stylus. I tried the recommended way to fix the problem, but it has not fixed his device.

  • lonegirl Feb 18, 2009

My son got the Leapster 2 for Christmas. For about 1 month it was working amazingly. Now it is about 50/50 on whether the stylus will work or not. It gets to his name and you can't choose it. I tried re-calibrating...no luck.

  • Anonymous Feb 22, 2009

What a relief! My son just got his for Christmas and I was sure it was broken! But this suggestion worked perfectly and now it is working as good as new!!!

  • Anonymous Feb 23, 2009

I had the same prob, crying little girl who couldnt do anything with it. Thanks to Octo-***** it is all fixed. Thanks!!!

  • Anonymous Feb 25, 2009

Thanks - it worked very well. Octopus80's stylus recalibration directions and the helpful hint under that about touching the A button returned our Leapster to normal.

    Thanks so much.

Leapster 2 Doesn't Recognize Stylus and can't get passsed the sign on screen

  • Anonymous May 05, 2009

Leapster turns on fine, but when I get to the sign-in screen and touch a name with the stylus, it just keeps saying do you want to sign in as a guest and even if I touch Guest, it still won't leave this screen. This Leapster was new not even a month ago. What's the problem and can it be fixed and if so, how????

Hold the hint button (question mark) when turning on the device. When the device turns on, do the stylus calibration and touch each of the crosshairs that shows up. After you are finished restart the leapster and you should be fine.

Sethnchrista- Press the power button FIRST then immediately press and hold the "?" until you it comes on and then release the "?" and press the "A" that says "Calibration". Then with your stylus hit each of the "+" until it's finished. Then press and hold the power button until Leapster turns off. After screen is black release the power button and Leapster will turn back on and will be Calibrated successfully. Good Luck!

I am having trouble with this solution. It seemed to work at first, then stylus was useless again. And when I hit A button to recalibrate - the crosshairs didn't even show up,just got a blank screen. When they finally did show up - I thought I fixed it, but after restarting the stylus was useless again. Very frustrated.

WOW, was actually searching for a NEW or Used Cars edition of the Leapster 2 because ours wouldn't work, unfortunately they don't make the Cars edition anymore. My 4 year old was heart broken.. This fixed his and saved me mega bucks.. THANK YOU

SOURCE: Leapster won't turn on

Had the same problem. I could randomly make it turn on by some bazzarre combination of pushing buttons. Now won't do anything. Call Leapster 800 #, and thought I was getting a bunch of b.s. from a "tech" person, however IT IMMEDIATELY RESOLVED THIS PROBLEM. Remove the battery pack and batteries. Take a pencil eraser and rub/clean the contact point where each battery goes in on the tray (except the coil sides). Reinstall the batt's back in the trey. Use the eraser to do the same thing to the outside contact points on the outside edge of the tray as well as on the Leapster itself where the tray goes. Finally reinstall the the battery tray, and BINGO ! Crazy....I would have lost a bet on this "fix".

Hello. My daughter's Leapster 2 sound has stopped working. She has only had it brand new since Christmas. Can it be fixed?

Have you tried putting new batteries? If yes and still has no sound then look for the warranty and bring it back to the store where you bought it so they can repair it for free.

If you need to sync the device to the stylus just follow the steps below.

1. Turn your Leapster 2 off, and remove the game cartridge

2. Hold down the 'hint' button while the game is off. The 'hint' button is the middle small button in the row of three above the directional pad on the left, with a '?' on it.

3. Leapster2 is 2 1/2 years old. Placed brand new batteries in Leapster2. Try to power it on, screen comes up like it is going to turn on, and it turns off.

Welcome to FixYa!

Power Unit off
While turning Leapster 2 on, hold down HINT KEY. (Key in middle with question mark on left hand side)

Once unit switches to other menu, Hit A to begin calibrating.
Follow prompts with Sylas pen to reprogram Stylus pen.
Once you are done it will return to original Calibrating Menu.
Power Unit off Turn unit on with game inserted. Stylus pen should respond.

I recalibrated the leapster2. It recognizes the stylus on the calibration screen. When I reboot it still doesn't recognize the stylus at all. Please help.

Hi,

If your Leapster does not respond to the stylus pen, it needs to be calibrated.

The following are instructions below on how to recalibrate the leapster.

1. Insert a cartridge, turn the unit on and wait for the sign-in screen to appear.

2. Hold down the Home, Hint and B buttons simultaneously.

3. When the screen changes, press the A button.

4. Using the Stylus, touch the center of the targets.

Thanks for using Fixya.

We have a Leapster 2 which the screen no longer registers when touched by the pen. Can this be fixed or replaced? i bought it only 2 months ago hope you can help Emma

I posted a solution to this problem a couple months ago. We have the Cars edition of the Leapster2. I'm guessing it was the same problem that we were having. When the pen touched the screen there was no response and the unit had barely been used. Try this!! I found it on www.ehow.com.

Callibration
  • If you touch your stylus pen to the screen of your Leapster2 and it does not respond, your unit needs to be calibrated. To do this, make sure no game cartridge is in the unit. Turn the unit on while you are holding down the "Hint" or "?" button. Keep holding the button down until the Leapster2 menu appears. You will need to turn off the unit and repeat these steps if you do not see the menu. When the menu comes onto the screen, press the "A" button and use the stylus pen to touch each of the crosshairs as they appear. When you are done, your unit should be properly calibrated.
