Turning on My tv is about six years old. Everytime I turn it on after a few seconds it shut off. (when it shuts off the front power light does not go off). I have to turn it off and then turn it back on again. I go through this about 10 or 15 times before it stays on. Is this something that can be fixed? If so, can I fix it?

These sets are notorious to have bad components in the power supply, and if you have solid state repair experience, you will need a service manual to repair this SMPS(switch mode power supply) Good Luck

There is a large sand filled resistor on the main board close to where the power cord attaches that cracks. This will stop power until it cools enough to make the connection then heats up rapidly to open it again. It may be worth the trouble if you're handy with a soldering gun and can get the back off the TV. If not then I'd consider getting a flat screen.
When it shuts off and the green power light goes off, press both the menu and input buttons on the front of the set (not the remote) and hold both for about five seconds and release.
Power light will blink a two digit error code like 2 blinks and then 3 blinks and repeat it several times.
My thoughts is that there is an issue on the power supply board. Sony is one of the best serviceable TV's. If you find a TV shop that services Sony. They will be able to fix it. May not be the cheepest but they should be able to fix it. Blessing, A/V Media Guy
It seems as though the bulb(s) in your unit are about to go out. This is repairable/replaceable by calling your manufacturer. If you are still under warranty they can help you by possibly troubleshooting/replacement/referrals.
try turning off the auto shut off feature in you set up screens . you can find them through the menu button on your remote. scroll through till you find it and turn it off.
It could be a component short or crack on the power supply board. Open the back of the TV and look for signs of defect. The power supply board is the brown one on the right with huge capacitors.
I also have a Sony KDF-42WE655 42" Lcd television. We just changed the lamp (bulb) several weeks ago and has noticed that everytime we turn on the television it stays on about 30-40 seconds then cuts off. After about 15-20 seconds it cuts itself back on. Weird!! It must have something to do with changing the bulb!?!?
