SIM cards do not fit laptops, they fit mobile phones and iPads.

you will have to register it to you modem or fit a sim card to connect it to the cell network
If you have no sim card then there is distance problem associated with the operation as you will need to find wifi hot spots ( maccas , shopping centres etc) for it to connect

If you purchased the 3G version,yes it will need SIM card.SLot is located on side of iPad.

It may be a case of wrong cutting of the micro sim. Since the iPad uses a microsim, you haveto make sure that the sim card is cut perfectly. Do not use a pair of scissors, you have to cut it specifically using a micro sim cutter. Or you can check if the placement of the sim card is correct. Sometimes, the card seems to get loose thus making it unreadable by the iPad.
