I have this problem as well! I was just googling this problem when I found your post. I have the exact same watch and have had it for 2 years. I don't expose it to the sun or heat though.

I had the same problem. Replaced the battery very carefully; Test display came on; As soon as I pressed a button the egg timer came on and the display was corrupted and barely visible.
I tried the solution recommended by banjodoug. I also clipped the metal cage back on differently - I pressed the clips in diagonally starting with the corner of the battery contact underneath (this lifts up the circuit board in the corner very slightly). Clipping it diagonally this way seemed to seat the circuit board and display better.
Hey presto, the test display came on...I waiting few more seconds and the time came on.
It seems to be working fine now.
