Disadvantages of exercise bands

Exercise bands are a cheap and convenient piece of exercise equipment that are mainly used in rehabilitation. Here I will talk about the three major disadvantages of exercise bands. First of all, if you're looking to get bigger and stronger, exercise bands are not for you. The amount of resistance that exercise bands provide is not enough to cause hypertrophy or any serious strength gains. Dumbbells, barbells, and machines are a much better choice if you're really serious about the gym. Secondly, it's hard to know how much resistance you are using with the exercise band. This makes it difficult to keep a progression chart because you don't know exactly how much resistance you used last time. Third disadvantage is that low quality exercise bands can be dangerous. For example, if you do a certain exercise and all of a sudden the band snaps, you can strain a muscle. Also, if the band flies and hits your eye/skin, it can cause an injury as well. In conclusion, if you're look for a safe rehabilitation program or light exercise, then exercise bands are great for you. But if you want to make strength and gains, drop the bands, go the gym, and pick up some dumbbells.

What muscles does the fit-loop exercise band work on?

Fit-loop exercise band is a type of exercise band that's used to work the lower body muscles: legs, hips, and glutes. If you're looking to target upper body muscles and core muscles as well, fit-loop exercise band is not for you and you should get a different type of exercise band (figure-8, fit tube).

A fit-tube exercise band is a 4 foot long exercise band with plastic handles. Nice thing about this type of exercise band is that it can be used for exercises like lat pulldown and triceps pushdown which require you to attach the band to the top of a door.

How do I know what resistance level to look for when buying an exercise band?

You need to buy one based on your current strength and fitness level, not the level you are aiming to reach. Here is a guideline of what to base it on:

extra light (fit-loop, figure 8, therapy band) - rehab, frail people
light - rehab, some women
medium - average, untrained women, some older men
heavy - average untrained men, active women
extra-heavy - active men, strong women

ultra-heavy (all bands except fit-loop) - strong men, women bodybuilder

This diagram has been taken from the following website: http://www.simplefitnesssolutions.com/resources/Guidelines.htm#CHOOSE CORRECT RESISTANCE
