Speaker distortion on high end

Recently purchased a pair of Bose 901 Series IV speakers. There was distortion on the high end. Tried hooking the Onkyo M-282 Amp to another set of speakers and it does the same thing. Quite often the sound would drop out of one speaker. I would tap the amplifier and the sound would come back. Could it be speaker wire or does it sound like something is wrong with the amplifier. The amplifier is also pre-owned.Can anyone help?

replace the speaker wire first, with new wire- 18g will do. Maybe that'll solve your problem, but it sounds like a loose connection or cold solder joint in the amp. Unless you know what to look for, you need a tech.

Help. I purchased a Onkyo Model TX 8555. I then purchase a set of Bose 901 Series V speakers that come with a Bose 901 equalizer. I cannot hook them up. Does anybody know how to do this.

The TX 8555 can drive the speakers directly but if you want to use the equalizer then you need to add an amplifier to the system so that you can feed the pre-amp connections from the TX8555 through the equalizer and then into the amplifier to drive the speakers. This is because the TX 8555 doesn't have a loop back function for monitoring recordings.

I just enherited a pair of bose 901 speakers

My suggestion is do not hook the 901's directly to the Onkyo. It is compatable, but they WANT more than what the receiver can give them. I suggest going and getting a dedicated amplifier for them. Trust me, you'll be a lot happier going that route.

I believe there are two nuts on each post. The first one locks up against the firewall and the second secures the speaker wire against the first nut. Tighten the lower nut snug against the enclosure.

Bose 301 speaker fell off bookshelf. Still works,

Determine the series from the label on the back and get yourself one or a pair (preferred, so they match sonically) of new woofers and replace the broken one. Carefully observe the + and - leads and replicate them on the replacements.

Sometimes you can snag a pair of whole speakers cheaply, too. Then you might end up with one spare 301 and one for parts. I use a single 301 IV as my Rear Surround, suspended on the wall behind my seating position. They also do well as Center speakers. The Series IV is also made of some kind of plastic composite which is bullet-prrof compared to the previous particle board models. I had one hit the floor from 5 feet up and it doesn't have a scratch. Get familiar with the models as they are all different in their tweeter arrangements. For example, the IV's are designed for corner placement with one tweeter facing inward at 45 degrees and one on the opposite diagonal corner of the box facing 180 degrees opposite the front tweeter, into the corner for a bank shot.

No bass response out of 901's but 301's are perfect

You should check your 901 speakers for phase.
Heres how to do it........ Remove the 901 speaker grill so you are able to see all the drivers cones. Now connect the 901 speaker wires to a 9 volt battery. Now u can check if all the cones would move forward or backward at the same time. Make sure that they all move in the same direction, otherwise you have to reverse the polarity of the driver that dont move with the rest.

What kind of amplifier and other accessories are recommended for bose 901 speakers

I would recommend a high power 2-channel amplifier, minimum 16 guage speaker wire, and of course the Bose 901 active EQ that matches the series of your speakers. I use a Yamaha mx-830 power amp & cx-830 pre amp 170 wpc They (Bose) claim that they're unlimited power handling, But if you use a amplifier with to little power and overdrive it to make it louder, you could damage the speakers or amp. With my 170 watt class A amp,the 901 series 6 will blow wind across the room. Go with the best amp you can afford! best for money- Yamaha,Denon,Onkyo!

Cannot hook eq to my receiver

The speakers will not sound right. You dont have two tape monitors on this receiver? You can simply use the tape otput to the EQ input, and then the Tape monitor input to the EQ output leads. Good Luck
