This is a common problem caused by a certain style of touchscreen being used. There is conductive silver ink/paint borders around the outside of the touchscreen that fracture due to heat. The touchscreen can not be repaired and must be replaced with a style that does not have this issue.
when phone is idle, the auto lock feature locks out the screen. you can set the time when lock engages or disable completely. To unlock, press top right corner button or use touchscreen options by sliding finger up from bottom to top or press unlock button on bottom of touchscreen
Touchscreen not working ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Clean the screen with a microfiber polishing cloth. Do not wear gloves while using the touchscreen. Do not use the touchscreen with wet hands or immediately after applying hand lotion. Moisture affects touchscreen behavior in the same manner as it affects a trackpad. If you have a protective plastic sheet or film on the touchscreen, try removing it, because it may be preventing the touchscreen from working properly. The current application may be unresponsive; press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPod touch for a few seconds until a red slider appears. Then press and hold the Home button until the application quits. If that doesn't work, turn the device off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the device for few seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears. If the device did not turn off, reset it. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for a least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Please rate me
I can give you the following suggestion. The touchscreen will recognize your stylus tapping if you simultaneously have any of the keyboard buttons pressed (except 'Clear'). Once you see the whole menu (after screen calibration and brightness settings) press Clear than Exe than Clear and the screen should be touch sensitive again.
The touchscreen is a thinlike mylar sheet that overlays the screen. Once damaged, all you can do it get it replaced. To verify if the touchscreen is "smashed", try using the thumbwheel or up and down buttons. If you can move around the display, then this means the touchscreen is damaged but will not prevent you from using your device, that is, until you turn it in for repair/replacement.
A friend had a similar problem, with the touchscreen not responding at all. I read somewhere on the internet that if you press the four corners of the screen very hard with your thumbs it may come back. I tried it...and it worked!
