The software you are referring to is a driver

click start control panel administrative tools computer management device manager scroll down universal serial bus controllers you could see a yellow question / exclamation mark? ! or a red X

you will need to update/reinstall drivers

right click to reinstall drivers

if you can see your usb drive but its not working

ports (com&lpt) right click update driver if this fails to fix the problem

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red white green black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems for a computer and its parts

if you dont have a disk with the drivers

you will need to download one try one of these

You will need to use software to try to recover the data or send it to data recovery company.

One of the most popular software tolls would be EasyRecovery but there are more

Mabee the hard drive has failed . try entering bios and see if the hard drive is recognised .If not try turning the computer off unplug it then reconnect the drive data cable and power cable
then re- start the computer and see if it is recognised. some models of older hard drives needed a driver installed during set up -- you usually have to put the driver on a floppy disc and hit the f6 button when prompted by windows set up to install third party drivers . I hope this helps

Computer not recognising hard drive. I have even looked in disk management and it's not recognised there either. The hard drive is lighting up when connected so it is working.

HI sineadkirk1

There are several reasons why your hard disk can not be recognised by the computer

1> usb cable problem
2> usb port problem
3> the problem on a computer virus or hard disk
4> computer problem
5> hard disk problem

do the test one by one to ensure that the root cause

WD HD Media player damaged my hard drive??

Hi Dear! This problem could be solved through a software. You should use Western Digital Disk Manager, your WD hard disk will work properly after using that your WD hard disk pass all test of the software. When it will pass all test it will work properly and in other condition if it will not pass then you should try again so that the software will fix the error and it will made workable.
Thank You

Cant load xp onto sata HDD

To use XP with a SATA drive you'd need to use the HDD disc software first as XP didn't come with preloaded SATA drivers. This is what is preventing you from installing XP on the drive. Once the driver is loaded you should have no problem. If your new hdd didn't come with a disc then you can download it from the hdd manufacturers website under the support link. Hope this helps.

My computer will not recognize my 160GB WD My Passport Essential portable hard drive.

if you have any software that you installed with the drive try uninstalling it, i had the same trouble on my 500gb WD. after you have uninstalled the software, restart your computer and reconnect the drive. hopefully it will recognise the drive as it did with mine.

Hard driver (seagate)

hi,

is it a sata or ide (pata) drive? does the bios recognise it yet? if it does then you know you have a software problem which could mean you may just need to partition or format the drive.

if the bios can't even see it then you will need to change the jumper settings on the harddrive to make it compatible with your mother board.

good luck

Drive not recognised

Try re-mounting your drive after a fresh re-boot of your computer. If the drive came with the manufacture's software to allow it to communicate with your computer, then try removing this software from your system and re-installing it again. This will repair a corrupt driver or I/O program. Try using the drive with a new or different firewire cable. Other users have reported this drive working again after replacing the cable.
