This looks like what I have for my hot water heater timer. However, the model number is T173.
Open following link for T100 series parts:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Intermatic-trippers-and-parts.html#T100
The T173 timer is 120Volts and wires same as T103.
Only difference between T173 and T103, is the T173 has day-skipper wheel

Note that the "IMPORTANT!" paper insert that came with my EH40 shows one small jumper between 1 & 5 and the second small jumper between 2 & 3 (and, of course, the jumpers aren't really long enough to reach from 1 to 5!). Jumping 1&3, 2&5 makes more sense and matches the labeling on the plastic insulator piece...

Hi,
Don't know how to get more simple then the wiring straight from Intermatic...
Here is the link to the manuals for your timer...

SOURCE: I have a Intermatic T40404R
Thank you for including model number.
Intermatic catelog shows that T40404R is shipped with two T104M timer mechanisms.
However the mechanisms can be changed out for either T101M or T104M, and these timers can be wired many different ways so there is not 100% certainty unless you know or test voltages.
Here's the general difference
T101M is 120 Volt with 120Volt clock motor
T104M is 240 Volt with 240Volt clock motor
You can buy $20 clock motor and $3 trippers and fix the timer mechanism instead of replacing it.

Thank you for this response! Very helpful. I ordered the trippers from Intermatic.com. The other problem I just discovered this morning is that the clock does not move. So, even though I had one off-tripper that I used to shut off the HW by p.m., it didn't matter because the timer piece (the yellow dial) does not move. However, the timer is ticking away like crazy. What is the best solution for this problem? I am not electrically-inclined and have been able to see how to shut off the ticking. I would like to use the timer, but if the yellow dial does not move, there is no point and so I would, then, like to either turn it off entirely or replace the T173 timer for another timer.
