You might try this, although it might not work on your specific model as some Elitebooks keep the password even if these steps are followed. http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Display-and-Video/Reset-BIOS-Password-EliteBook-8540w/m-p/927235#M30136
why ask fixya, and not hp
the shot gun method can work or brick the PC.

the CMOS RTC battery and its NVRAM
does not store the password, on
any elite boot or probook.
it says that on over 1000 posts at hp.com
and for sure is the truth, i have many.
the admin BIOS password kills booting.
so all silly answer above for booting x,y,z
are yes, silly to a fault.
It also has finger print reader , for boot.
and if opted a 3rd way in called the Intel PW recovery way. (intel asks 3 questions and you are in, tested by me and works !!!)
so you turned on all 3 ways when you bought this PC?, then you have 3 ways in, but you did not, right? only BIOS admin on.
some have bios user pass word the admin can change.
I have in our family 5times (8540w) all with bios pW not enabled, (for good reasons)
also if upgraded to w10 2 of those 3 ways above are dead and all HP security apps are now dead.
HP does not support w8 to 10 on this PC.
(but can change their minds at any time ask em')
call HP and ask for direct help.
or shot gun it and brick it.https://h30434.www3.hp.com/

If you eat risk for breakfast,

call HP, and ask for the BIOS reset with SMC.bin file.
that is 1st choice every time.
so why ask here and not HP.?
HP designed it not fixya.
HP built it,
HP sold it,
HP supports it, not fixya
all we can do is point to lies or the official HP support site.
