Why is my oreck xl 21 hard to push on carpet?

sometimes the little rubber wheels in front wear out of round and bind. Try those first (if they're the tiny ones you must buy a pack of 20 from oreck directly) and Orecks are known for being hard to push when bag begins to fill up.

Alternator

Loosen the TWO screws that hold the alternator.
With a wooden tool push the alternator away from the engine until the belt is tight. It has to have a little elasticity left, don't go HULK on the belt tension. you should be able to push it about 1/2 inch with one finger by pushing hard.
Tighten the TOP screw first that is on the curved bracket.
Then tighten the bottom screw.

You're done.

Is there a wrong way to attach the belt and the sweeper?? My Hoover Runabout is making a rubbing noise, like the sweeper is hitting something, and it's real hard to push.

take off the belt . clean any hair from brush roller make sure movement smooth . re position belt and move by hand to make sure roller is not skew , , rubber is riding sideways and causing friction .

Hard to push

Check the belt. A broken belt results in the roller brush not turning, which means the vacuum will be harder to push. You may be able to replace the belt yourself, if it is the problem, but I recommend taking it in to the shop.

I have a dirt devil featherlite plus and all of the sudden it started pushing hard and smells hot. I cleaned the roller, changed the bag, checked the belt. The belt is a little wore, but not bad.

If it is pushing hard then you still have a belt problem. It may not be broken but the belt is stretched out too long and will not turn the roller brush fast enough to make it push easy.

Self propel does not work and it is real hard to push this way. We checked the belts and they both ok. Not sure what else to look at, the on line manual does not show any information

Hi there SmartAlec from NelsonVacuums.com.au here. Ok on this particular machine the belts strtch quite a bit and make the machine very hard to push even though the belts seem to be ok. I would recommend first making sure that the driving self propell is actually working at all. Tip the machine on its back all flat and turn it on. When you push handle up and down you should see a pair of wheels spinning one way then the other (corresponding to the way handle is pushed or pulled). As long as the wheels are moving then it is just that the wide flat belt just needs changing even though it is not broken. If the wheels are not turning at all even though belts are in place then you have a more sinister problem that will require a technition to check over.
hope this helps!
happy Vacuuming :)

How do i change my drive belt on my 2000 chryser voyager

Hello there:
If you have 2 people it is a lot easier You will need to remove the fan guard if there is no room. than on the idler pulley there is a square hole that a 3/8 socket wrench handle with a cheater bar and a socket extention will go in to now just push hard on the handle and the pully will take the tension off the belt so that you can remove it. please please if you dont have the routing diagram for the belt write it down how the belt goes before you remove it. put on the new belt and once again use the socket wrench and push hard on the idler pulley and slide the belt under the pulley and slowly release the wrench

My vacuum has good suction but i can hardly push it across my carpet. any answers????

is your brush roller turning, that would cause it to be hard to push .the brush roller helps it walk across the floor.if your brush roller isn't turning then your belt is broke or the brush itself siezed up.unplug the vacuum and try to turn the brush roller .if it turns real free then your belt is broke.before you replace the belt always clean the motor shaft ,the old rubber from the old belt melts onto the motor shaft .if you don't clean it your new belt won't last very long.please leave feedback

While vacuuming it's unusually hard to push.

Hi,
I see your post is from May. I just joined Fixya this month so, id you're still looking for a solution, I would saythe belt broken or is so stretched the roller isn't spinning. Here is an link to an online guide with illustrations for changing belt. Also check the roller brushes for wear and change if necessary. Hope this helps.
