I had downloaded latest software updates for my Humminbird 997c SI and my 1197c SI.Then was attempting to update them one ata a time following typical software updates for these units like I had done in the past, resetting factory settings then running software update. My 1197c SI update perfectly with no problem, then moved up front to perform update on my 997C SI and went through same process as mentioned before. I turned around for less than a minute and turned back around to a black screen.
When attempting to turn the power back on it started the loading screen and then stayed there for over an hour. I brought the unit inside and connected to the PC via USB cable and opened my HumminbirdPC. I made it to the Matrix Boot screen by holding the "View" button down and proceeded to toggle down to the #9 "Program" command and again pressed "View" to start to HumminbirdPC recognition sequence. My unit is not recognized by the software and the unit came back with a "Programming Failure" response.
I have attempted this several times and even brought the 119c Si in to try,keep in mind the 1197C Si is up to date... However thinking that the 1197C SI would load and be rcognized, now both units have the "Pragramming Failure" response when trying to get Humminbird PC to recognize them!?
I have my PC with Windows Vistaup to date as I just went through a 26 item update with windows, including service pack 2. I have all Drivers up to date, all Security updates and still no recognition. I thought maybe it was something with my PC... So I borrow my wife's work computer which is a Dell with Wi ndows XP and her company keeps it updated thoroughly. Same result... Then borrowed my Sons MAC that runs Parallels and has Windows 2000 on it. No Luck!!
I have exhausted all ideas and could use some additional ideas if someone has any. Any input would be appreciated to get the 997C SI up to date. I have heard tha it is appx $200 to send it in to Humminbird and the new 998c is outrageuosly expensive.

OOOPPSSS.. this is a common issue after some updates... you might have to uninstall the updates!! Bird's are notorious for not taking updates and still working as before.. call humminbird service.

On your "My humminbird" page you will find free software updates for your particular unit.
download the latest update to an SD card and follow the instructions for the installation process.
The Power/Light is used to turn your GPS on and off as well as to adjust the background and back light. To adjust the back light press the power/light key to access the light and background menu. Use the 4 way cursor key to select light or background. Then use the left to right cursors to change the settings. Then press exit to exit the light/background menu. This should answer your question.
If you are pertaining to software that is possible. All you have to do is go to www.humminbird.com and create an account which is free. Then have a blank sd card anda card reader attached to your computer. Have you serial and your unit type when creating an account. Then down load the software on to the SD card and when finished slide the sd card in the card slot of the unit. Power the unit on and answer the 2 question it gives you.

Probably you doownloaded thr R4 software from the wrong website. so to the legit website and install the latest one, but even foirst, format ur SD card. The it'll work.
