Starter cord replace pull cord

Turn Off the Ignition: Move the ignition switch on the Craftsman trimmer into the "Off" position.
Remove the Starter Assembly Cover: Use a screwdriver to unscrew the starter assembly cover and remove it from the trimmer.
Prepare the New Pull Cord: Cut off the old cord from both the pulley and the starter handle. Dispose of the old cord.
Replace the Pull Cord: Flip the starter cover over and replace the pull cord. Make sure it's securely attached to the pulley.

Replacing any starter cord is usually a matter of removing the pull start assembly, pulling the cord until it is completely unwound, block the reel so it cannot retract, remove the old cord, (remember EXACTLY how it was connected), install a new cord, unblock the reel so it can retract, re-install the assembly.
It may be necessary to remove covers or engine shrouds to get to the pull start assembly. That's part of the fun of "do-it-yourself".

First remove the pull starter housing.
The next part is tricky. You'll have to release and unwind the spring that rewinds the pull starter cord. Remember how you do this because after replacing the cord, you'll have to rewind the cord and spring before inserting it back in the housing.
re-attach the pull cord housing to the chain saw.

Small Engine Repair Replacing the Starter Pull Cord on Briggs Stratton...

It realy depends on what model we are talking about, so i will give a general disciption, remove the four screws retaining the starter to the saw, remove the starter, if the cord is still under tention, pull the starter handle out approx 8", whilst held out hold the pulley to stop it retracting, let go the starter handle and unwind the now lose cord from around the pulley, once enough cord has been unwound let the pulley slowly turn until all the spring tention has gone, remove the center fixing screw, and remove the pulley, pull the old cord away, refit a new suitable diameter cord, knot the end and pull the cord into the pulley so as the knot sits flush into the hole in the pulley, wind the cord fully around the pulley,now refit the pulley to the cover, refit the centre screw ,push the other end of the cord through the cover eyelet and refit the starter handle with a suitable knot, now wind the cord around the pulley a further two times by turning the pulley and winding up the spring, allow the spring to pull the cord in, if required wind the pulley a further turn until the cord is suitably tentioned in the cover, replace the cover on the machine, pull the cord out to make sure it has engaged fully into the pawls before fully tightening the fixing screws.

Remove the starter mechanism from the saw and try to turn the flywheel--it should turn freely except when the piston is rising against compression. If ok, pull the starter cord and watch for twisted cord or a damaged/split spool. Try to turn the spool CW by hand to see if it is bound up by something. Was the starter cord just replaced? If so, maybe the return spring was over-wound and can't be turned further. Hope this helps!

I don't know exactly what you have there, but starters in general work pretty much the same. What you have to do with any starter when you replace the rope is to first wind up the spring with the pulley. Turn the pulley in the direction it would be turning if you were pulling the rope. When it's wound tight, back off to align the rope hole in the cover and the pulley. Stick the rope from the outside through the cover and pulley and tie a knot. Then let the spring tension pull the rope into the starter. Hope that helps. Dwain
