We purchased two of these handheld games for both our girls for Christmas. Now, one game system will not turn on after we put in new batteries. We tried the same batteries in our other daughter's game system and it worked. I don't know what else to try. Help?

  • horses_r_us2 Mar 07, 2009

Leapster worked fine for 2 months. Then after a week's "time-out", now it won't start up, even with new batteries. I bought it at the "after Thanksgiving sale" so we're 2 weeks past the 3 month warrenty!

Had the same problem. I could randomly make it turn on by some bazzarre combination of pushing buttons. Now won't do anything. Call Leapster 800 #, and thought I was getting a bunch of b.s. from a "tech" person, however IT IMMEDIATELY RESOLVED THIS PROBLEM. Remove the battery pack and batteries. Take a pencil eraser and rub/clean the contact point where each battery goes in on the tray (except the coil sides). Reinstall the batt's back in the trey. Use the eraser to do the same thing to the outside contact points on the outside edge of the tray as well as on the Leapster itself where the tray goes. Finally reinstall the the battery tray, and BINGO ! Crazy....I would have lost a bet on this "fix".

  • mrsboots Aug 10, 2011

Thank you! My daughter's pink leapster 2 stopped working suddenly after only having it, and hardly playing it, for 8 months. I was discouraged until I tried this. I had to do it a few times over each contact point (silver part, but not the coils) and it worked. Thank you!!

  • Anonymous Oct 27, 2011

Can not believe this worked! My son's Leapster 2 hasn't worked in a year. Also had to recalibrate screen because that wouldn't work either. Absolutely amazing. Now Mom gets a little peace in the car!! Woo Hoo!!!

  • Aubrey_f Nov 24, 2011

I just got back from the store with a Leapster Explorer for each of my twins. Of course, one turned on and one didn't. I Googled, found this fix, and it worked!! Thank you so much for posting and helping us avoid WWIII!!

Both my kids' Leapsters stopped powering up at the same time. Tried this and it worked on both of them! Weird. This seems like planned obscelescence to me based on the timing of both doing it at the same time.

  • Anonymous Dec 10, 2012

Both my kids' Leapster Explorers stopped powering on at the same time. This fix worked for both of the. Planned obscelescence, or coincidence? You decide.

This worked. Awesome! I tried so many other sites, but none of them worked. Great post!

  • Anonymous Jan 25, 2013

Even though it is now 2013, this fix still worked! I am soooo happy! My kids love their Leapster explorers and this would have caused some issues in my home if even one of them did not work! Thanks for sharing this FIX with everyone!

Thank you soooooooo much for posting this FIX! I just bought my daughter's Leapster Explorer in December and was not pleased to find that it recently stopped working. This is so far fetched and weird but thankfully I'm not to proud to do weird! It is awesome that your post from 5 years ago is still helping so many people!

I was having the same problem, until I tried changing my rechargeable batteries to regular batteries, then it worked fine. For some reason it will not work with rechargeables.

My daughters Leapster would not power on with the A/C adapter but I tried the suggestion with the pencil eraser and new batteries and IT WORKED!!!!! Completely amazing!! Even if the explorer doesn't power on with the A/C adapter, try cleaning the connectors and try it with the battery back and it appears to resolve the issue.

Tried this and it did not work right away. Used new batteries (we do not have recargeables), and pushed "B" button with power button and it worked! After reading some other posts about button combinations for resets, just started trying various combos. After all there aren't that many buttons on the thing. Thanks for your post as I think the eraser thing also helped in this processs.

I am trying to connect leapfrog leapstar to computer and follow application but when I connect usb with computer the leapstar says Please click "Eject button" Where is the eject button? I've...

The Eject button appears when a Leapster2 handheld is connected and turned on. When you have finished configuring the Leapster2 handheld and your child wants to play with it, you can click the Eject button to disconnect the device. Once ejected, a message will appear letting you know that it is safe to disconnect the Leapster2 handheld from the computer. It is not really a "button" but a picture of a green button which says "EJECT". It should be located on the upper right corner of your screen.

How can i change pets on pet pals for leapster explorer

Turn on your child's Leapster Explorer handheld.
When the SIGN-IN menu shows up, press the left D-pad and Hint button at the same time.

This will give you the PARENT SETTINGS menu.
You will need to start them from scratch to choose a new pet. It is sad but at current it is the only way to choose a new pet.

My daughter's Leapster 2 Handheld game's screen is dark. She cannot see any of her games that she tries to play. I tried using the brightening button, but it doesn't help. Also, have replaced the batteries...

are the batteries you are using the correct size/voltage for the leapster? I believe it takes 4 AA/LR6 size batteries at 1.5V each.
has the product been dropped or bashed?

Leapster2 is 2 1/2 years old. Placed brand new batteries in Leapster2. Try to power it on, screen comes up like it is going to turn on, and it turns off.

Welcome to FixYa!

Ensure NO GAME is in unit
Power Unit off
While turning Leapster 2 on, hold down HINT KEY. (Key in middle with question mark on left hand side)

Once unit switches to other menu, Hit A to begin calibrating.
Follow prompts with Sylas pen to reprogram Stylus pen.
Once you are done it will return to original Calibrating Menu.
Power Unit off Turn unit on with game inserted. Stylus pen should respond.

1) Ensure that a cartridge is not inserted

2) Hold down the Hint (?) button while turning the unit on. Continue to hold the Hint button down until the LEAPSTER menu appears. 3) When the LEAPSTER menu screen appears, press the A button 4) Touch each of the crosshairs that appear with the stylus 5) Restart unit

The pen has stopped working when touching the screen

If your Leapster 2 will turn on, but the touch screen is not responding to the stylus, try re-calibrating the stylus with the screen using the steps below: 1. Turn your Leapster 2 off, and remove the game cartridge.
2. Hold down the 'hint' button while the game is off. The 'hint' button is the middle small button in the row of three above the directional pad on the left, with a '?' on it.
3. With your finger still firmly on the 'hint' button, turn the Leapster 2 back on. Keep your finger on the 'hint' button.
4. The screen should be displaying the calibration screen. You can release the 'hint' button now.
5. Press the 'A' button on the right to enter the calibration screen.
6. A small '+' sign will appear on the screen. Touch it with the stylus. A new '+' sign will appear. Touch this with the stylus too, and repeat for as many '+' signs as your Leapster 2 throws at you.
7. The screen will return to the calibration screen. You can now turn the machine off. Leave the cartridge out of the console, and turn it back on.
8. Your stylus and touch screen should now be working, enabling you to sign in as usual.
9. If it is working correctly then you can turn it off, add a game cartridge and turn it back on
Thank you for using fixya! I hope I had helped you with your problem. May you have a good day!

Calibrating the Leapster2 is easy:
