I had the same problem with the Everio MG330 and I have fixed this problem!!
iMovie needs to be updated to v7.1.1 or it will NOT import from the Everio MG330 HDD video camera.  iMovie '08 is not enough, it needs to be upgraded to v7.1.1

I searched long and hard and finally found this.  IT WORKS NOW!!
1. Update to iMovie 7.1.1 2. Close iMovie 3. Plug in camera using USB cable (iMovie is OFF) 4. Open camera viewer to turn on camera 5. Choose top option (I think it is watch on PC or download to PC or something like that) 6. Open iMovie and follow the pop up instructions for importing.
Please go back to all of the other places you have looked to fix this problem and post this.  Let's help each other.

Using iMovie '08

  1. With your camera turned off and plugged into wall power, plug it into your Mac (also powered by wall power for laptop)
  2. Turn on the camera (by opening the view screen)
  3. Press the "DIRECT DVD" button on the body of the camera
  4. At this point, you should see the EVERIO_HDD drive icon appear in the left side of the finder window
  5. Open iMovie
  6. iMovie will auto-detect your camera and you can import your videos
Have fun!

JVC EVERIO gz-mg330 does not appear as drive

Another solution is to make sure you are using the usb cable that came with the camera. For some reason, if I use any other, the computer won't recognize the camera. It's the one with the magnet. In fact, mine has two magnets on it.
