SOURCE: scanner wont scan

provided you turned the squelch know and it didnt help, i would trace back from the squelch control to the first and second transistor you come to and that should be the squelch circuit. if you know how to check them with an ohm meter you can find out which one it is, if not you can just replace them both for under 5 bucks.

SOURCE: Won't pick anything up (uniden BC72XLT)

Not sure this would be a solution but...
Make sure you don't have the Ch. Locked out so it just skips them..

You may also try and let the scanner sit on one frequency that you know has chatter and see if you receive.

This unit also picks up local weather try that feature and you can tell if you reception is working or not.

SOURCE: I have a Uniden BC72XL scanner and cats knocked it

In your manual, if you have one, if not look it up on the internet. There are ways with all these types of communications, to reset to manufacturer and factory settings at time of new purchase. Then proceed forward in programming.

SOURCE: i got a police scanner the squelch stays on all

Try turning the squelch real slowly, most of the time its counter clockwise until it goes silent, hope this was helpful.

Last night was working fine - as it was on I noticed that the scanner was just stuck on one channel - I hit scan ( I have several channels programmed) It wouldnt scan. Then when I turned the squelch...

Hopefully Resetting or Initializing the scanner will clear the problem and get it working again for you. Instructions for these procedures are on page 38 and 39 of the scanner operating manual. If you don't have the manual, you can download and print it, at no cost, here:

It just scans and scans it never picks anything up. No clue how to work this scanner or where to get codes for it. When you turn it on, it just scans thru all the channels but doesn't seem to pick anything...

Sounds like either your squelch is set too high or you don't have the proper frequencies for your area programmed into the scanner. When it starts scanning turn the squelch down gradually until the scanning stops and you hear noise, then turn up slowly until it starts to scan again. If you still don't pick up anything, you probably need to reprogram the frequencies. For a list of active frequencies and systems in your area visit

In case you need it, here's a link to the manual for your scanner.

Squelch quit working in regular scan mode PRO-528

Just fixed my squelch problem; I don't know how it happened but Resistor 138 was burned & intermittant. It was so badly burned that I could not read the color code but it measured 880 ohms intermittantly. I replaced it with an 860 ohm carbon resistor & all seems well; time will tell. R-138 is located on the circuit board right behind the squelch potentiometer. R-139 is immediately behind the pot & R-138 is next to R-139. All I had to do is remove the 4 screws on the back of the case & the unit splits in half. I clipped the old resistor out leaving a bit of the old leads so I could solder in the new resistor without having to get to the backside of the circuit board. Scanner is working as I type this & I hope it does not burn out again. Hopefully this is the same problem in your scanner & an easy fix. Good luck.

NO SQUELCH

I have a Radio Shack Pro 97 Scanner that I received as a present 1-1/2 years ago. It was working just fine and then suddenly there was no squelch or volume. The keys make noise when pushed, but there is no sound for the squelch or volume. The scanner scans the frequencies but does not stop and play. I went on line and found that other people were having the same problems. I went back to the store that the unit was purchased from and received no help what so ever, they said it’ s off warranty and I was out of luck, nice way to do business??. I think that something that cost as much as this should not be junk after a short period of time. I hope you can help me with this problem I do like radio shack, but I can’t afford to buy items that don’t stand up.

Sincerely

Greg Stevens

Squelch is open all the time

Often the potentometer (squelch control) becomes worn or dirty, this can be sometimes cured by spraying a WD40 or similar oil and then rapidly moving the control down and up. Do not use oil that is conductive.
