Might be the fault to remote control, to respective buttons contacts [inside] it. You have to clean the remote control to make it work. Volume buttons on Sony remote will work on Sony TV only.

I would start by trying other codes on the universal remote. Sometimes codes will only work part of the remote such as the numbers or channels but not volume. Your motorola cable remote sounds like it may only need a good cleaning. sometimes when you take remotes apart it will look like somthing got spilt in it. I would start there first.

Your question isn't complete, but I am assuming your problem is that the remote contol volume doesn't work anymore. If this is correct, I assume that the remote pad board in the remote contol is worn or bad. Unfortunatly, there is not a good fix to repair the remote rubber pad.
