Thee powermate jr no longer works with my vacuum. I opened it and the belt isn't broken though, imho, I think the belt is a bit loose. Can that be replaced? I love this vacuum and don't want a new one, and having two cats in the house this attachment is invaluable for keeping my furniture fur free.
If the roller brush is not spinning freely once you remove it from the Power Mate Jr., then I have discovered the solution! There are end caps at each end of the roller brush. They seem to be permanently attached, but they are not. There is an axle inside the roller that is permanently attached to one of the caps. Take two pairs of pliers, and grab each end cap with a pair of pliers. Then pull hard to take them off. Once they are off, you will find that there is a big glob of hair wrapped around the axle inside. Remove the hair. Then reassemble the brush by putting the end caps back on. Make sure, when you put the caps back, that they are aligned so that they will fit back into the slots on the Power Mate Jr. You have to push hard to get the caps back on, maybe tapping one of them with pliers.

thanks for posting this! It saved me from having to buy a new one when the solution was soooo easy!! Mine wsa turning ok, but just a tad tight. I removed the hair and it came back to life!!!
It was easy to get the end cap off, using vise grips on one end pliers on the other end.

Mine was a combination of the Roller Brush not turning due to hair inside it as mentioned in the "best solution" above. This in turn,Ii believe overheated the motor and blew the thermal fuse mentioned in solution 3. I confirmed this by cutting the fuse out and connecting the two wires. The motor ran fine. You could leave it like this but would want to make sure you didn't do anything to overheat the motor. I bought the replacement fuse at Radio Shack along with some crimp connectors. The fuse cost $1.69. I recommend the crimp connectors if you have little experience soldering these type fuses. The heat from the soldering iron can ruin the fuse if not done properly. The origional fuse was also attached with crimp connectors.
I noticed the beater bar not rotating soon enough so that I didn't burn out the motor or any fuse. The problem was that discribed in solution #2, but I couldn't take the caps off with pliers. Instead, I C-clamped the "brush assembly" to a table, and tapped on the "support rod" (The thin steel axle that is connected to both end caps) with a hammer and nail. Make sure you tap on the side of the brush assy. that the belt attaches to: it is the side where the bristles do not extend to the end. The axle is not bonded to that side. I took the endcaps off, removed the hair from the axle, put it back together, and it works perfectly.
I have the same problem and have found there is a fuse on the Powermate Jr. motor, it is under the white sleeve on the black motor wire, now can i buy just the metal inline fuse or easier to buy a new unit for about $35.00!?

Take apart the brush roller and remove any hair spooled up in it . If the belt has cogs then don't replace it , ,if it is just a stretch belt it has too be replaced yearly .
SJ, I jumped the fuse and all is working as you suggested. I see Radio Shack has 3 temp fuses available. Which one did you use. Thanks for the help.
I have the same issue, but the dowel appears to be the problem. It no longer spins freely, even when not connected to the belt/motor. Sears Parts direct has the part for $10, though I can't tell if the unit inlcudes the pin and the end caps, which are sold separately. Note that the Powermate jr has it's own model number, separate from the vaccuum (you'll need this if you start your search using a model number). Took off end caps, cleaned out a wad of hair, reassembled and it works like brand new. Thanks for the tip Dude2525!
Solution #2 and #4 worked like a charm...thanks!
Plus #7, which worked great using one hand to hold the brush assembly and a nail set and the other hand to tap the nail set. The pin pushed out easily with just a couple taps, I removed the hair, then one tap of the hammer to get the end caps back on tight, and voila!
Thanks, everyone. You just saved me $35 and a ton of time, not to mention the gas and parts which would have been wasted by throwing this one away.

If you have a multimeter, check the thermal fuse. It's rated at 99 deg and if one pushes too ******* the head the fuse blows. Can buy new fuses at an electral supply co for about $1.50. Sears doesn't offer them

My power-mate Jr. just stopped working. My husband looked inside, found no clogs. Armature just seized up.
Same problem -- took it apart, even took the motor apart (partially) and could find no cause for the motor to stop running. It doesn't appear to be a fuse issue, since the fuse is in the main body of the vacuum cleaner and the larger carpet cleaner accessory runs OK when plugged in.

I have the same problem, so does anyone have a solution. I see no fuse within the attachment and the armature has not seized. Is the solution just to purchase a new attachment?
My Kenmore Power-Mate Jr., needs a new belt. Does anyone carry new ones?
Our solution was to purchase a replacement unit, which (so far) is working properly. I think we paid somewhere between $40-50.
My Powermate Jr worked exactly once. I noticed that on the Kenmore site they have substituted a compatible item for the original for this one part. My guess is that the originals are of a faulty design - I think they should have offered a free replacement if that is the case. It will cost me nearly $50 to replace it but I really miss it - I have 7 cats...!

So, 5 years later I get a notice from Fixya that there's an answer to my question (I couldn't even remember what the question was) so I look and see ALL these answers. I tried the one about taking apart the brush to get to the inside axle and lo and behold, it worked for me too! So all I can say now, is thank God for little boys who used to take apart their bikes that have now grown up to be men who take apart their vaccuums. :-) Thank you to everyone who contributed.
I took off the end caps, cleaned it up, put it back together and it worked. But it screams like a bansidhe (banshee) now. Any suggestions?
