Sounds like a bad formatter. I would try a firmware upgrade first and if unsuccessful, would replace the formatter. These formatters are infamous for failure.
From HP.com - he printer is experiencing a critical printing error. Unplug the printer for five minutes, and then plug it back in. If the error persists, contact HP customer service at the number provided on the support flyer included with the printer, or visit http://www.hp.com .
